This was my son's 2nd birthday cake. The letters are fondant, the rest is BC. Those are M&M Minis on the sides.

M&M's on sides are wonderful.

Thanks! You can't tell in the picture, but the shell border was orange, not red. This was an image transfer using the Wilton piping gel method. My husband scanned the invitation into the computer and printed it out, and I traced in onto wax paper using piping gel, then laid it on the cake, and iced around the edges using tip#3, then filled in with tiny stars. The eyes and nose were several layers of swirls using tip 3 to make them pop out.

I love your cake! My neice is turning 1 on Friday and she loves Elmo. I am making her cake. I think I'll try something similar. What type of icing did you use? If you used a crusting BC I'm wondering how you got the M&M's to stick!

Thanks so much! I used the Wilton snow-white buttercream icing recipe that comes in the can of meringue powder. It stayed sticky long enough for me to hurry up and put the M&Ms on.

Piper, I made your cake this weekend. It was so much fun to do and eveyone loved it. I hope you don't mind that I used your idea, but it was so cute I couldn't resist. I used a little different Elmo and put a red and white rope border. I didn't use the M&M's because I had used a crusting buttercream and didn't think they would stick. Thanks again.

Well, sounds to me like you made your own original cake! That's great, but where's the picture? We want to see it!

I didn't post the picture because I didn't want people to think I was stealing your idea and trying to take the credit. I used your idea for the fondant lettering and that worked great. I'm not very good at writing on cakes and the fondant letters are a perfect solution. Thanks again.
