First Fondant Class Pink Rose

First Fondant Class Pink Rose on Cake Central

I took a basic fondant class with Lida Snow this week. While I have covered a few cakes with before, it was nice to get tips from a pro. This is my first fondant rose--very fun to make. I think my fondant was a bit too thick on both the cake and the rose. I tried a diamond impression mat on the sides, but don't think it turned out how it should have. I am a Critique Subgroup Member--all comments and suggestions welcome.

Critique Subgroup Member: I agree with you, either the fondant is too thick or you had too much underneath making it softer and harder to get a good impression from the board. I would use the apricot glaze when you use those impressions. Also I use a pizza cutter to cut around the bottom, it looks just a little rough. The cake board is fine. Usually you do a bottom border and it gives enough room for that. I do love the rose and the cake as well. Great job!!! ;-D

critique subgroup member: very pretty rose and leaves. some of the fondant pattern went a little wonky, but it's not bad. it's very pretty!

Critique Subgroup Member: first of all, your rose and leaves are fabulous- great job. I have never used an impression with the fondant already on the cake. I have used an impression before I put it on the cake and it leaves nice deep markings. I personally like to use thick fondant, as it leaves a smoother finish.

Critique Subgroup Member: I'm certainly no fondant expert, but I, too, would guess the fondant was too thick. The rose and leaves are very, very nice, but I can see why you'd prefer them not so thick. It's still a pretty cake and some type of border would have cured the board problem. Still, a lovely cake!

Critique group member: This is very pretty! I love the rose an dI agree with sonoma that you almost achieved a quilted effect which I think is nice. So other than getting the impression to impress better and cleaning up the edge I think it adorable!

Critique Subgroup member: Really great 1st fondant rose! You'll find that you'll be able to do them thinner in no time. Good job covering the cake, but work on the edges. You've actually almost created the "quilted" effect, which is really cool, but not what you intended, I think. It looks like the fondant was too soft to hold the impression. It could be a timing thing more than a thickness thing. Great job though!

Critique Subgroup Member: That's a really pretty rose! As Daveilg mentioned, you'll need to clean up the edges of the board with a pizza cutter. I also like the simple colors of white, pink, and green. ;-D

critique subgroup member: I think the rose and leaves are just beautiful. You should be very proud of those! I am not sure why you couldn't get a deep consistent impression on your fondant. I haven't done a lot of fondant covered cakes, so I am not the one to help you, but I know someone will. Overall this is a very pretty, simple, elegant cake. With just a little tweaking, it'd be perfect. Nice work.
