Thoreau Inspired Baby Shower Cake

Thoreau Inspired Baby Shower Cake on Cake Central

I love the quote from Thoreau that's on this cake and wanted to build a cake around it. The green accents on the globe are MMF along with the yellow flowers. The baby on top and the butterflies and dragonflies are all chocolate transfers.

It may be intensional but I would like to see the icing on the bottom smoother. The "viva" method works great. The world should have been centered to give balance to the overall design. I like the quote and those fun little butterflies buzzing around. Your cake is, overall fun and inventive and I do like it a lot!! I do hope that isn't aluminum foil on the board.

Critique subgroup member: This is a nice idea for a cake and you have a strong pastel pallet. I have some cake fetishes though, one is handwriting on the cake, and the other is cake boards. Your board is two small it should be 2-3 inches bigger then the design and nothing falling off the edge. The handwriting in this country needs work. Try fondant alpha, wilton inprint, pinprick with preprinted....to get a nice pretty handwriting. Your transfer is adorable. The earth is a bit off center. Use a cake pan....

cont'd: to lay out before placing the cake. The bug look like an after thought to me, need to be bolder, or more of them. But this is a great idea!

Critique group member: This is a very cute design! I love the addition of the quote, however the are some improvements that could be made. First I don't like the way the icing is smoothed it detracts from the design. Also the babies waist is really tiny compared to the rest of his body and too me the continents look formless I would have taken the time to make them resemble the real ones.

critique group member: this is a very cute design. I like the element of the earth being 3D and your baby and butterflies being chocolate transfers. I think the baby would've been a little bigger it might balance the cake out a little more. It looks like you may need some extra tools to help you get your cakes smooth. Maybe a bench scraper or use the Viva paper towel method. I like your border with the yellow roses. But I think the earth could've been centered more and maybe the continents a little more

con't:defined. I think that the design is very unique and I do love your quote. This is a overal nice cake! good job!

critique subgroup member: I see things the others saw...the Earth is not quite centered and the continents are not shaped as well as they could have been. I also think the blue maybe should have been a little darker and the color of the bottom cake darker (like the sky) or pure white (like a cloud). I would have loved to see a molded newborn baby sleeping on top and maybe stars and clouds for the border rather then grass and flowers. I hope I am not sounding overly critical because this is a very sweet...

cont.....cake and I do really like it. I am just brainstorming ideas and possible changes and typing as I think. It truly it nice and the quote is so perfect. (BTW...writing on the side of a cake is not easy and you did it quite nicely here!)

critique group member: This is a great design for a cake! I agree with what's been said about the world. I'd like to see the continents more defined, maybe outlined? It could even be cartoonish since the CT baby is cartoonish. The baby could be a little bigger (or the blanket smaller). Tiptop's right about the writing, but I love the idea of having the quote on the cake! The bugs/butterflies are super cute!

Critique subgroup member: great design- I agree with most of the comments so no reason to repeat what's been said. I love your little baby and your border

Critique Subgroup Member: I'm sorry, but although I like the sentiment, my first impression is that it's a bit messy. The globe isn't centered on the cake and the cake board is much too small. I don't mind handwriting on a cake and yours looks good. I don't see how the bees tie in to the theme. The baby is very cute I apologize for being negative, but I'm being honest.
