The buttercream won't give it the same look, in terms of smootheness. The fondant just gives it sort of that cartoon/animated look, too. But most people do like buttercream better, for sure! I had buttercream underneath, so people had the option of peeling the fondant off. It's really a matter of whether you care most about the taste or the exact look.
Also, you might check at a Tractor Supply store to see if in their little section where they sale all the little farm animal toys they might also have a weather vane. I made mine out of gumpaste, so you could always try that.

The weather vane is made of gumpaste. But I ended up having to use hot glue to get it to stay, so I just warned them not to eat it!
