I covered the cakes in fondant then placed a piece of lace material on the cake (once the fondant set a bit). Then I "iced" the lace in royal icing using my icing spatula; then I gently peeled off the lace to reveal the pattern on the fondant. I piped the outlines of the flowers, etc. to give it depth. Note: I iced the tops of the cakes first then I took a separate piece of lace and wrapped it around the sides to ice, otherwise you'd end up with folds on the sides.

wow, that is just really pretty! How did you do this, brush embroidery?
confectioneista 10/26/07 at 6:33am
It's not brushed embroidery. Sorry... I just added my "how-to" above.

:o beautiful job and such a good idea!! Did the royal icing crack off when it was cut?
confectioneista 7/1/09 at 9:34pm
Thank you! This is a cake dummy so it was never cut. But I've not had RI crack off when I cut my cakes, especially when using a straight edged knife. HTH
