Sweet Sixteen Retro Cake

This was my second "tury" cake. Alternating chocolate, vanilla cake on the inside filled with chocolate buttercream. Iced in BC, decorations are fondant and letters are gumpaste. Lots of fun!

How did you do your gumpaste letters? I want to do something like that for my daughter's bday cake. How long did it take for them to dry and harden? Also, what did you use to stick them into the cake? Toothpicks?
