A Cowgirl's Birthday

I made this for a cowgirl named Antonia. Cake is white cake with buttercream icing and gumpaste and fondant decorations.

I started by molding the "bowl" of the hat out of a ball of fondant. Make it as tall as you want the hat to be and in a soft tear drop shape. Using a fondant tool, make a canal around the top of the fondant ball to form the hat's detail.

Next, roll our a piece of gum paste that is about 6" bigger than the fondant ball. Wet the top of the fondant and cover it like a cake making sure to push the gum paste into the indention you made on top of the hat. Using a round cookie cutter, center the top of the hat and push down on the cutter to cut the brim of the hat.

Using a paper towel roll (cut open and flattened slightly) or a flower former (the half moon shaped one), place the hat in the mold to dry. This will create the bends on the sides of the hat.I made the bow on the hat out of gum paste using the same technique as the regular loop bow calls for just on a much smaller scale.
