Help, how do I get the edges smooth? I need more practice, but not too shabby for a wannabe!

Single layer 8 in lemon cake, torted/filled with lemon curd, lemon BC icing. I added lemon curd to the BC to thin & flavor it, but it's obviously too thin--you can see through it--lol! Instead of the Wilton clowns, I opted to practice the dots and swirl flowers in class. My kids are terrified of clowns, so I don't plan to use them anyway. I need lots of practice!!! Also should've used my Magic Line pan with the nice straight sides. This was a cheapo pan w/slanted sides.

My class opted to do Valentine's cakes instead of the rainbow cake or character pans. Duncan Hines choc. fudge cake, torted and filled with seedless raspberry jam, with Wilton class one icing in chocolate and vanilla. One recipe of choc. icing just barely covered the cake, but I didn't have time to make a second recipe of chocolate. Fortunately the shell border covers most of the bare patches! This is so much fun!!! I used Melvira's roller and parchment to try to get a smooth finish. Need practice!
