Plan B looks just fine...good recovery! I too use a crumb coat on darker cakes.

Rose cake gone wrong!

So, I was making an anniversary cake for my parents. I wanted to do a rose cake and it didn't turn out very well. The red velvet was very crumbly (again my first time making red velvet) so I ended up having crumbs in my icing. It was late at night...

So, I was making an anniversary cake for my parents.  I wanted to do a rose cake and it didn't turn out very well.  The red velvet was very crumbly (again my first time making red velvet) so I ended up having crumbs in my icing.  It was late at night and I was on the verge of disaster.  This is what I came up with in a panic!
