Thankyou, I'll try altering my icing recipe instead - it did seem off that the buttercream came out so much easier than the royal.  

I didnt reallise it was unusual! Using buttercream icing seems ok, but with regular icing (royal icing perhaps?) it really hurts my hand with all the squeezing. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
