I am making a cake for a friend who requested an airy sponge cake however she would like it to be 3-d and covered in fondant. Do you think the fondant will be to heavy for the cake? And do you think it is possible to shape a 3D cake using a cake other than pound cake?
Need help?
Thank you in advance........

I'm thinking that if you use mmf, it shouldn't be too heavy because you can roll it out pretty thin.

I only use pound cake. It eliminates the problems before they begin. About 95 percent of my work in my gallery is fondant and is pound type cake.
I hate pound cake, and I don't find many people around this area that love it, so that has been my problem with making cakes. Most people I know find pound cake to thick, so if anyone has any ideas of a nice cake that isn't pound, that's easy to decorate, please let me know!

I know a lot of people here use pound cakes for sculpting, etc. All of my fondant-covered cakes are "regular" cakes. I've never made a pound cake with fondant covering but will try it one day to see the difference.
I agree that if you try rolling your fondant a bit thinner because of the type of cake your doing, it should be alright.

I cover my box made cakes with extender recipe added with fondant. I have never had a problem. I haven't sculpted them too much yet, just minor things. I think if you were going BIG you would have to use a pound cake. There are sooooo many different pound cake recipes out there...I'll bet theres something that you'd like!
