I am making a cake for a small wedding, 100 servings. I'd like to make the cake look a bit sleek since the venue is an historic art deco hotel. So I want to try skinny tiers. I was thinking 11, 10, 9, 8, 6, with the top reserved for the anniversary.
I'm not sure. I've stacked the pans and it looks ok, but I've never done one!
does anyone have an example of a cake they've made with similar dimensions?
jen
i was hoping you'd chime in because i know you love doing this type of cake. Can you tell me the sizes on the bottom two?
thanks!!
AHey, check the order again, I replaced one of the images and I bet it's not the same two now.
LOL just trying to figure out what size your bottom tier rounds are on the four tier cakes.
AOkie dokie, bottom tiers.
Green dotty one was an 8 White with blue pearls is a 7 Written one was 6 Pink rosettes was 8 I am fairly certain of the sizes without digging out contracts.

wow, so those are really skinny! in your opinion, would a 10 or 11 inch base be too big for this effect?
Thank you!!
AZ Those cakes are OUT-OF-THIS world awesome.
You continually post the most amazing cakes. If I ever get to the State of Arizona I'm going to find your shop and buy a cake take it to my hotel and eat the whole damn thing.
ADefinitely, any size, doesn't matter if it's got tiers close to the same size above. Just don't top it off with a huge top tier, but that goes with any cake. :D

AOk, hopefully tou understood that as, yes, those tier sizes would be just fine as bottom tiers.
AWhen are you getting your own show, AZ? Or your own book? Or traveling the world and teaching us mere mortals how to be awesome? Cause all that needs to happen, like yesterday.
AZ is some new fangled cake master robot software artist. Her work is not of mere mortals hands. <sigh>
SPCOhio, isn't that the truth! She does such beautiful work. I'd love to learn from her!
I'm feeling like Garth & Wayne in 'Wayne's World'....when they met Alice Cooper.
EllaVanilla I look forward to seeing your masterpiece. You're going to do great.
AOh geez guys, there are wayyyyyyyy more talented people out there than me! But thank you, I appreciate it! Shoot, when is PBS (cause they're the only ones who would do it right!!) going to do a series that visits Peggy Porschen's and Cake Opera's shops? Or does a three (or four or five) hour documentary on Margaret Braun? That would be good television!
AOlder thread, but AZ if you have a moment I have a quick question. Using your chart, I see a 5 tier cake in the towery section. My client really wants 5 tiers, she's flexible but I'd like to give her what she wants since it's possible. Anyway, you say it depends on the designs Do you have any suggestions to making the cake look "right". Things that I should or shouldn't do? It's one of those super hero cakes but we are mixing it up with star wars
Well, I tend not to go heavy on details that stick out too much. Let me grab some examples to show you.
Oh well...I guess I posted them already on the front page.
Ok, so most of the details should really be flat where possible, maybe only a few that are really large and stick out from the cake, otherwise, with the lack of "shelves" (the ledges of the tiers under each one), details that stick out will tend to look a little funny. In my examples, you see there aren't any details that stick out much. I hope that makes sense.
So, painted space scene on a couple or few of the cakes, fading into whatever background you'd use for the superheroes? Cut out planets, maybe with slight puffiness underneath them for a bit of texture, and maybe one or two round planets....
A topper is definitely ok, maybe make it where part of the topper hangs down even, extending past the top of the top tier. (Hope THAT makes sense)
I'll keep thinking @morganchampagne
AAZCouture, the cake with the writing on is stunning! Sorry to butt in on a thread I'm no use to but I just had to tell you how much I love that cake. It's so beautiful.
