Easy Yellow Cake

This recipe is so easy and soooo good! I like to swap out the vanilla and use other extracts, or add some lemon or orange zest-very good! Here’s the video on youtube showing how I make it:

Easy Yellow Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 c. all purpose flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1 c. Crisco shortening
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 c. milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350, grease and flour pan(s).
  2. Sift together dry ingredients in a medium bowl. In a large bowl cream the shortening and sugar until somewhat fluffy and creamy-about 4 minutes. Add the vanilla extract, then the eggs and mix until just blended. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk in three parts beginning with the flour and again mix until just blended. Pour into pan(s) and bake for 40-50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out with just a few crumbs. This recipe can make a 9×13 layer or a 2 layer 8″ or 9″ cake.

I just have to say your recipe is a lifesaver. I needed a quick yellow cake for a baby shower. I was skeptical at first using crisco, but it actually came out better than using butter. Thank you so much for posting this recipe.

I have this cake in the oven right now!! I am excited to taste it. I have made scratch before using butter instead of crisco but I don't like them. Hopefullly I will like this one better. Oh and I saw your video on youtube and wanted to say thank you for posting it, it was awesome.

I was wondering if you think it would be ok to use butter flavored shortening? I'm looking for a recipe to make a cake for my son's birthday, but he wants a buttery cake.....

I haven't tried butter flavored shortening with this, it would probably work the same. However, McCormick and Wilton both make butter flavorings that you could add, I love McCormicks Vanilla Butter and Nut flavoring, tastes sooooo yummy!!

I tried to comment on your video but it's not allowed. Can you tell me if this is dense enough to stack please?

Just pulled this cake out of the oven. All I've done is taste the crumbs and it's to die for!!!!! Can't wait for it to finish cooling so I can get this puppy frosted and decorated so we can eat it!! The only thing I did with the recipe was add yellow food coloring to give it better color. Otherwise, I followed it to a T!

this cake is the bomb! MOIST MOIST MOIST! I have been searching for a universal batter that can be used for many flavors and this is it. I Personally, think that it is sorta bland as is. I used 1/2 the recipe in the plain form - as the recipe is listed above. then I took 1/2 of the recipe and added 1 tblsp. cinnamon, and a couple shakes of the apple pie spice to the mix. then I placed it in cupcake molds w/ papers- and on top, I added a struesel mix that I just made up on a whim. it was like, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a little bit of butter to hold it all together. mixed just a little till struesel like and put a little on top of each cupcake. It was DELISH! you could add butter and almond extract for a delicious butter almond wedding cake, or coconut extract and some coconut for a killer coconut cake. I have LOTS of ideas and experimenting to do with this one. but, TRULY happy with the first batch.

Did not like this at all. I agree with another poster-tastes like sweet cornbread. It was slightly smoother, but didn't taste anything like a yellow cake.

I also did not like this at all. Sweet corn bread is a very accurate description. Tried it with icing also and it did not compliment... not a keeper.
