Hi, just wondering what the most effective way of making a rainbow icing swirl is? Ive seen a few different techniques, some 'paint' the bag first with either straight food colouring or swatches of coloured icing and then fill it with white icing and some colour large amounts of icing and put it all in the bag together.. need to do about 100 cupcakes in this way so really looking for the easiest way thats not going to end up with the colours all mixing togther and going brown.. i was thinking of maybe filling freezer bags with coloured icing, cutting a hole in the corners, then putting them in a large piping bag and doing it that way.. but not sure if that would work! thanks for any suggestions.

Watch this video. At one minute 44 seconds you'll see her demonstrate the "frosting bullet". I'd suggest you use those for your multi-colored swirl with a 1M.

The video kinda "sticks" at 5:06, so skip ahead to about 6:12 and continue watching from there. You'll see a 2 colored frosting plug and a 3 colored frosting plug demonstrated.

I use two small piping bags in a bigger one. I fill as I want them to come out. For example, on my Red Velvet Cream Cheese Cupcakes, I want about 25% red. So one bag gets a small amount of red and the other bag is filled.

The bullit is messier than the piping bags.

There are the icing plugs, as Apti said, or two small piping bags in a bigger one, as SCP says. And, there's also (kind of what SCP does) the Ateco striper bags, 18"...big enough so that you don't have to keep on changing your icing that often.

noahsmummy~~Here are some examples of cupcakes that I did using the multiple colors in one bag (I used the Wilton Disposable Decorating Bags) and the 1M tip. I did not use frosting plugs/bullets" for either of these, I just mixed the colors in the decorating bag, then piped the swirl. When I did these cupcakes, I didn't know about the "frosting plug/bullet" method.
