I'm looking for everyone's two cents here! Thus far I've been using my round Wilton roll & cut mat to roll out my fondant when covering cakes - no huge complaints, it's a well-seasoned mat and has worked quite well for me with one exception - it has a wrinkle in the very middle of the mat that REFUSES to flatten or smooth, so every time I roll out my fondant for cakes - they have the same wrinkle on the very top of the cake!!! Decided it's most definitely time to upgrade and would just like some input and reviews on what you guys are using/have used. I'd like a mat that of course is food safe above all, but also something that you can use a cutter on without ruining it would be very nice as well. Thanks in advance for your help!! icon_smile.gif

The best fondant mat ever is "The Mat" by Sweet Wise. They have a website and you can view the demonstration on You Tube. I wouldnt cut on it but its the best for rolling fondant. I also Have Fat Daddio's silicone mat that I use for cutting.

the Mat is food safe and easy to use. I love mine. as for the wrinkle in the wilton mat, my wilton instructor gave us a great tip on removing the crease. lay a pillow case over the clean mat and iron out the wrinkle on a low setting until its gone. when not using the wilton mat roll it around a rolling pin or something similar.

Kellbella - is the Ateco mat safe to cut on? Would that harm the mat at all? jade8 - thanks for the tip on smoothing out the Wilton mat! I'll have to give that a try!

Not with an exacto knife! I found that out the hard way! I use pizza cutters, other cutters like shapes, yes, but not blades.

Yes, I agree... THE MAT by Sweet Wise is the easiest best Fondant Mat. Just do a youtube search on "How to cover a cake with fondant" and watch the video by Sweetwiseinc. They have a lot of great videos on their youtube channel.

I went to the local fabric shop and bought a yard of heavy duty vinyl. Worked like a charm! Didn't have to use PS, CS or shortening. Best money ever spent! thumbs_up.gif

I use "the mat" and love it. But there have been times that it will have a "hump" in it that I can't get to flatten out. Even though I always keep it rolled up in the tube it comes in. When this happens I put in in a warm clothes dryer for about 45 seconds, works like a charm. HTH

For everyone getting new Mats-- if you get the Ateco (the blue silicone)-- be sure you DO NOT cut on it!!!! It is NOT self-healing!! Believe me, I learned the hard way! icon_cry.gificon_redface.gif

I did purchase a 24 x 36 self healing mat from I think either Joanns or Michaels- with my coupon it was around 50.00 or 60.00-- they have all different sizes- see what works best for you. Another GREAT investment.

I also have a small one, 12 x 8, that I use to work with smaller projects.

Hey molly36, ButRCream was asking about a FOOD SAFE Fondant Mat. Sweet Wise advertises their Fondant Mat as food safe. Here is a link follow to see why fabric shop vinyl IS NOT food safe http://healthychild.org/5steps/5_steps_5/?gclid=CKKuhImri6wCFQLj7Qod-2Zvmg . Sweet Wise says THE MAT is Phthalate and BPA Free and also does not have heavy metals like Mercury and Lead. I also read a recent article on cnn.com about BPAs affecting fetuses. I bet if asked my clients, they would prefer I use food safe tools. I bet your clients would too. Be safe.

Wow! I had NO idea! Pretty sure I got the idea on here so I'm glad I know now. Guess I need to find a way to recycle my vinyl.
That's why I love CC, lots of great, useful info.

And they just sent me an email w/a tracking # saying it's being sent today. So far so good icon_wink.gif
