I am making my first paid for wedding cake next weekend on the first. I am making my flowers this weekend so they have time to dry. I have never made a calla lily before. I think I know the basics, the heart shaped upside down around the center stamen, but I don't know how to get the "real" look to it. And I haven't figured out what I should do at the base of the flower, how to finish them. or how to connect them into an arrangement. I need a spray on top of the cake and then smaller groupings on the different tiers. Anyone have a good tutorial on making calla lillies? Or any words of advise?

Here is a tutorial by Edna De La Cruz, she has great tutorials on gumpaste flowers and this one is part 1 of 4 for Calla Lillies.

Oh and you can also use the veiner from wilton that they sell at Michaels or Joann's, those work too, HTH.

Roll the gumpaste out as thinly as possible, and then really thin the edges. I use a pasta machine and roll the gumpaste out super thin, vein, cut, then thin the edges with a ball tool without ruffling the edge. Use your ball tool, and press hard to enlongate the point of the (spathe) heart shape. After I insert a hooked wire about 3/4 the way through the spadix (yellow tubular part), I let the spadix dry for a while, then brush it with egg white and roll in granulated sugar (leave it uncoated near the base where you are attaching. I usually brush yellow petal dust near the base and through the center of the spathe (heart shape) before attaching to the spadix, just because it is easier to color it before hand. I hang my small and medium callas upside down to dry. When they are dry, I dust an apple type green at the base on the outside and a fine line of it up the spine of the calla. I use a hooked 22 gauge wire for my callas. If the stems are going to be exposed, either using green aquarium tubing, or apply a very thick application of green florist tape on the wire. I think making callas in different sizes really makes a huge difference in how it ends up looking. I just made some orange and pink callas for a wedding cake last week. You can take a look in my gallery if you'd like to see them, and feel free to PM if you want.

I used a fresh celery rib to vein my lilies. I rolled the spathes in semolina after coating with egg white. After dusting with yellow petal dust and green at the base, I finished them off with super pearl. For the stems, I bound three 18ga wires together with green floral tape. The calla lily is a somewhat fleshy flower so I don't roll them as thinly as some do.

Please explain the purpose of the egg white. Did you use on the whole calla lilies. They look shiney.

I got my flowers made this weekend and they turned out looking great! I just hope I can arrange them in a pretty way! I wound up using yellow sugar sprinkles on the center and used gumpaste glue to stick them to the center "stamen". Thank you all for the help!

Hey Cassi, I'm glad your callas turned out for you. And Believer, I used egg white merely as a medium to make the semolina stick. It doesn't show at all. The shine was achieved with super pearl dusted on after completion.
