I have to do a couple of display cakes soon and was wondering if anybody out there ever makes their own cake dummies. I live in a regional area and don't have access to a cake supply store locally, so to get foam cakes via the post gets ridiculously expensive since you tend to pay for the size of the package and not the weight.
And to be honest I hate putting icing on foam cakes because they are so light! I always feel like I'm going to send it shooting off the bench icon_rolleyes.gif

Any suggestions greatfully received!!

Happen to have a three tier home made cake dummy wedding cake sitting on my table. My husband used 1 1/2 inch blue foam, traced around the pans and cut them out with a dremmle tool. We glued them together with a construction adhesive and then sanded the edges smooth. Last step was to round the upper edge with an emery board. Each tier is 4 1/2 inches tall but that foam was what we had on hand. I lightly brushed them with water and then applied fondant. They look great!!

Try ordering your dummies from Guildcraft. I have found them really reasonable and the shipping is reasonable too.

No Guildcraft in Australia and I don't have access to good foam icon_sad.gif Have done a bit of googling though and think I may try the expandable foam. Fingers crossed it works!!
