Lately I have been having trouble with my fondant bulging. I have no idea why it is doing it because it goes on just fine then after the cake sits for a few hours it starts to bulge on at least one side. Any ideas? I could really use the help! Thanks in advance!
Two questions: Are you using a stiff dam of buttercream in between the cake layers? You need a dam to hold the filling in...even a BC filling! Second: Are you allowing enough time for your cakes to settle? Cakes need to settle with some weight on them for at least a few hours, preferably over night. I learned about using a floor tile as a weight and it works wonderfully! Okay, one last thing, could it be a "blow out", or my new favorite "cake fart!"??? Does it look like an air bubble kinda bulging out? Many theories on what causes the blow out, but its fixable...Just get a clean saftey pin or straight pin and poke a small hole into the fondant as soon as you notice it happening, and gently push the air out1 HTH!
I have had cakes bulge before, the worst time was when I wanted to get to bed but also wanted to get the fondant on before I did so I didn't let the cake settle and in the morning it had a big lump from either the buttercream in-between layers, and the middle layer (out of 3) seemed to spread out a bit. Then lately I seem to keep getting these 'cake farts' thank-you for that wording confectionscc although usually I don't notice them until the icing has dried so you can see the hole where I have to poke something in... I have no idea where these come from however they only seem to have come along after I got more confident in covering a cake in fondant so maybe I'm not using as much care as I once was? Who knows lol
Ya'll go to http://www.sugaredproductions.com/ and get Sharron's DVDs!! Also, look up Sweet Ideas The cake Shoppe on FB and take a look threw their classes album. Sharron was there giving her buttercream class and one of the cakes had "farted". They show pictures of her repairing the damaged BC!!
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help! It is definitely air trapped and I think it is because I didn't let the cake settle, I am always in such a hurry!
