So I'm flipping through the TV this morning and see that tonight there's a new show on WE called "Iced with Sylvia Weinstock." It's on tonight at 9 PM EST. Here's a quote from the WE site:
"Iced with Sylvia Weinstock is a one- hour special that gives two aspiring wedding cake designers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete to win a three-day mentorship from the top wedding cake designer in the industry, Sylvia Weinstock. It provides a window into Sylvias high-end world of cake designing, as the apprentice is pushed out of her comfort zone to create her biggest wedding cake yet. As we join in all of the fantasy, joy, struggles, and breakthroughs, Iced with Sylvia Weinstock single-handedly changes the future of one wedding cake designer."
Wasn't sure if anyone else was interested in watching or knew it was on. I'm woefully addicted to "Amazing Wedding Cakes" (not enamored with the new bakers this season but they're starting to grow on me a bit) and I am facinated with Sylvia's work so I will definitely be catching it this evening.

I love Sylvia. And will probably check it out just to see her. But I'm really tired of these game show/cake shows. I've seen Buddy have contestants struggle through an 8 hour wedding cake, only to push them off the roof and have the contestants remake them. I've seen cakes stolen and hidden in the middle of a pool where the contestant had to wade out and retrieve it, carrying it to shore over her head. It really has nothing to do with decorating anymore.
They have cooking shows on food network where you get to relax and watch someone explain and demonstrate how to make a pasta dish and the ratings are fine for that. Why not a cake show in that same vein? A decorator in her kitchen, demonstrating how to make roses, or how to stack, or how to ganache a cake. Maybe the first half of the show, she bakes a different cake each week. Then the second half is dedicated to a different decorating process.
i missed the show. since wetv is not playing the show anytime soon, does anyone know where i can watch this online. i have been searching this online and have had no luck. thanks
It was okay. She is cute as a button. Not sure about the show yet. I'm thinking I should give it a few more episodes. It was a little annoying that everytime she showed someone how to do something they would edit some of the process out. I have a background in pottery and clay sculpture and I was a little put off that she kept talking down about those who use cutters and other tools as less talented and not true artist. (Does it make you less of an artist if you have a room of ladies making hundreds of flowers and elements for you?) i don't use all those tools the first lady showed up with and do most of my work with a knife and a rolling pin, but I don't think less of those who use tools to create that are different than me. They edit wienstock clips showing her talking down about a future three day intern and the next clip is showing the contestants oozing admiration for her. I felt a little sad for them knowing she was being a little snarky. Also I was a little confused they were to intern for three days yet she gave them a six hour cake challenge with a bride. When asked how to approach the bride with questions she tells them "I'll tell you some but I'm not going to tell you my whole process" which was very clear thru the whole show. Another interesting thing was that she gave them a bunch of fresh flowers to use as a resource and it looked as though she became annoyed with them and walks off saying she's taking the flowers with her. Am I wrong or isn't internship the opportunity to learn complete processes from a master of a trade. Guess it goes to show you that even someone considered a renown cake designer can still be afraid of sharing. The bride and groom in the end seemed happy even though they missed a few color requirements and had a few delivery mishaps.
I watch 'Iced with Silvia Weinstock' last night....it was ok but I think it's going to be just another one of those cake shows. I was expecting alot more teaching and how to's. With them winning a 3day internship I wasn't expecting them to be left to make a wedding cake. I was expecting Silvia to teach something.
I agree with artscallion, we need a real cake show teaching real techniques from start to finish.
I watch these cake shows not because I like the drama, but because I sometimes am able to learn a little something, pick up a different technique or just get a new idea for a cake design.
I was very disappointed with 'Have cake will travel', there's hardly any 'cake' anything in this show, which is a shame because I did enjoy watching Ashley on the other challenges she participated in.
I saw the show and it appears that she looked down on people that uses fondant, cutters and molds. She states that those who uses these products are not true artists. She also stated that people uses cheap fondant because they cannot do a smooth butter cream.
I thought "Have Cake will Travel" was a flop! I watched two episodes and that was all I could take. I also watch these shows to pick up some helpful hints. I still wish I could have watched the Slyvia Weinstock show last night. Darn thunderstorms!! Does anyone know if there will be more episodes or was this a one time event?

I agree! I am sick sick sick of the game attitude and some customers are starting to pick up the game/challenge attitude which is even worse. I would LOVE to see a realistic, respectful, professional cake show come out for us to be able to pick up tips from and for customers to see a more realistic approach.
Not to mention how annoying it is to see all the petty arguments, back-stabbing and rudeness. If these people hate each other so much don't work together!! We don't need to see or hear all of that. Show us the amazing artistic ability of these people, their ability to listen to the customer, to deliver what is requested and their ability to work together as a team. Skip all the melodrama and show the world some great role models not a bunch of psychos who can't get t heir acts together!! Should we see the mistakes and how they fix them? Definitely!! But not the petty nonsense of blaming and finger pointing. I've learned more on CC than any of these shows because of the caring helpful attitude of this cake-loving community. Maybe if enough of us complain to these networks we can see some change for the better!

I'll watch any cake show in the hopes I'll learn or see something new. But I don't/can't watch Have Cake Will Travel. One of these days her intern is gunna tell her where to stick it.

10xHigh, I agree that her tone came across as somewhat condescending and a little snarky. I think the decorators involved will be a little embarrassed when they see that.

ITA! I'm a hobby baker and I know that I have limited skills. I watch these shows for several reasons: 1) In hopes of picking up some techniques, 2) to watch real talent in action 3) to "get to know" some of the cake stars that people are always talking about. I do not like the game show format that they are cloning with every new show.
I also work in other art mediums and tools are used to create. Yes, anyone can use a mold or cutter, but it takes talent to embellish them, use color techniques and put it all together to create a work of art. Not everyone can do that no matter how many tools they own.
I found myself cringing at all the fawning expressed by those two women. I never saw Sylvia Weinstock before, but I was aware that she was a big deal in the cake world. I was a little surprised and put off by her attitude and the comments that she made. Maybe it's just her way, but if she didn't want to "tell them everything", was looking down on them, and found the situation annoying- why agree to a show? I don't like to see that sort of behavior in real life and don't want to watch it on a show about something I enjoy. I was more interested in her assistant, I don't remember her name, but she made lovely flowers from what little they showed. I don't think I'll be a fan of this show.
Not to be snarky myself, - but when did cake decorating take off and become as popular as it is today? Years ago, when these titans got their start in the business, I imagine they were the trend setters at the time. It isn't to say that they didn't work hard or lack talent - they are the on top of the field, after all. Isn't the field more saturated now? It seems that cake artists have to push the limits even further.

I can bet Sylvia didn't put her little signature glasses button on that cake...lol and I also can bet there was a true cake waiting in the wings for that wedding reception all baliwooded out. I also agree with you guys about have cake will travel.... Her sculptures are big like most if her but I bet all the venom in that kitchen being sprayed around makes her sculptures taste less than desirable. I feel for her kids if she really is traveling as much as she is and not with them. I am sure with editing it makes her seem nonchalant about not being with her kids or I hope anyways. I also agree with those who expressed the impression potential customers are getting on how quick a project can be created. I am the only one in my kitchen, sometimes at three in the morning making elements. I am years away from having six assistants scurrying around while I place finished elements together....Yet no matter how much one of those shows my aggravate me I still dvr them in hopes of taking one new way of doing things away from it....most of them teach strongly how to treat those you can employ better.
They must have told the bride ahead of time that this was for the show since the couple appeared on it. I wonder if Sylvia would have let them deliver the cake if it had been totally horrible looking or tasting! There must have been loads of criticism left on the cutting room floor! She obviously has a lot of disdain for home-making hobby bakers! Would hate to be on this show.
I watched the show and as someone who loves all things Sylvia, I was a little put off. The constant "housewife" thing got me because when she started she was a housewife who got lessons from a local baker. I know she tried to cover it up at the end by saying she considers herself a housewife, but it was a little too little a little too late--an afterthought maybe? I think that some of these trendsetters seem to forget their origins-saying things like they'd only use interns who are art or culinary students, when many themselves are self-taught. It always humbles me when a great artist is humble. Yes, they have achieved a lot, but remember your roots. As for the fondant and mold comments--REALLY? Doesn't Ron Ben-Israel use molds, cutters and fondant? I'd put his cakes up against hers any day of the week. I thought it was just an awful thing to say and the way she said it wasn't nice. I appreciate her skill, and think she and her staff are geniuses, particularly with the hand-made flowers, but there are some artists who use different mediums, and we need to respect them all. Can we say that Rodin was a better artist than Picasso because Rodin sculpted the human figure while Picasso merely drew/painted it? I don't know, I was a little upset by the whole show, and I have so much more to say, but I'm getting ticked off. The Challenge shows are becoming unwatchable. (Do I really need to see Marina Sousa being driven all over LA? NO! I want to see her decorate her cake. AND I DON'T CARE IF IT MOVES, TALKS, PLAYS A GUITAR OR RECITES "JABBERWOCKY"!!!!). Amazing Wedding Cakes is decent and Fabulous Cakes is good too. Buddy's show is more about his family than about cake, and that "Staten Island Cakes" looks like it is going to be a rip-off of that. "Have Cake Will Travel" is a vapid waste of time and red lipstick. Please, for the love of all that is sugar, put Marina Sousa or Elisa Strauss or Ron Ben-Israel in front of a camera with some piping bags, gum paste, fondant and molds (uh-huh-I said it!) and let them do what they do! Deep breath. End of vent. 
I think that some of these cake divas run the risk of losing their popularity if they come off as a conceited, condescending snob. Especially if they are putting others down for being where they once were themselves. I always thought that the most impressive successful people were humble and magnanimous. I was impressed by Ron Ben Israel when I saw him on a contest show- he was kind and never said anything to embarrass or demean the contestants. He was a class act and I'd like to see more of him on TV.
I agree with everything you all are saying. Save the drama for the soap operas!! Do these people, such as Silvia, understand that some of us hobbyist, or beginners who are following her same path look up to them as examples??? I think the snide demeaning comments inspire me to work harder, learn more (from CC ofcourse not tv) and be the best so I can set an example to a new generation of cakers. Its an art. Its unique. Its something we all enjoy. People shouldnt be scared to give away techniques because we all are individuals and our methods vary. So if any of the more famous cakers-like Sharon Zambito (my hero) could have a show-it'd be AMAZING!!
So was this just a one time show? I was going to set a series recording but my DVR would not give me that option. Oh well because it was not fun to watch! I don't understand how they learned anything from her??? They were forced into a situation above their heads that I think they were terrified to do! I would be! I like to watch "Fabulous Cakes" and "Amazing Wedding Cakes." No competition! I agree, where are the programs that just show new techniques and share tips and tricks??? That would be wonderful =)
