i am wanting to buy a turntable, have never had/used one before, have been looking at pme - because of their great reputation, but am not really sure whether i want a flat or tilting turntable, can the tilting ones be used as flat too? its good that there is a variety available but at the same time i wish that there was only one as then i would not have this problem!
for all of you who have turntables, any advice or opinions would be appreciated
thanks heaps
I have the blue Wilton plastic one, my only thing is I wish it was taller. When I was at the Wilton School in Chicago they had the professional ones so I intend to get one of those. I have never seen the PME ones, but I recommend a tall one. I don't know much about tilting ones, the old wilton one was discontinued and you may find on clearance but I had someone tell me her cake fell off one time. They have a new one coming out though.
Try googleing the name of the turn table and reviews...you may have some reviews out there that way.
I have both of the Wilton turn tables... The tilting one sits on a shelf and I never use it unless I have to decorate on the sides of the cake... It is also to tall and unstable. My other one I use all the time. I do hope they come out with a better tilting one.
PME is good, as is Ateco. BakeryCrafts also. Just get one with a heavy base. Wilton products are generally crap. The tilting turntable is a cute idea, but not one that youneed to put $ into and devote storage space to. If you need the cake at an angle, just shove a bench scraper or something else under the side of the cake board to life it up. For a taller turntable, set the turntable on something, like a small bucket of fondant. That brings your cake up to eye level.
I don't recommend Wilton turntables. I have the one with green edges, and it's rubbish. It doesn't turn smoothly...it's okay some of the time, but then it starts up shuddering/vibrating when turning whenever it feels like it. I've pulled it apart and done everything Wilton said might help, but nothing does. It's ear-marked for the garbage bin as soon as I get my hands on a decent one.
I have the white plastic Wilton turntable and haven't used it in 3 years! My DH went to the Lowe's bought the turntable mechanism and built me a wonderful, heavy, very stable turntable from pieces of counter top that we had left over from a remodel project. I love it!
I have a Decorator's Delight, High.

Yup, the Wilton one is rubbish. I have it and I paid 50% off so I'm not too bummed about it but it does skip when it turns sometimes. It's better than nothing but I'd like a better one.
I have the cheapest Wilton turn table. The little flat plastic one and I LOVE it. I promise I'm not crazy. I put my regular cake stand on it and then place the cake on the cake stand. Works great, is a nice height and I've been using it for years. I can put shelf liner on the cake plate if I'm worried about slippage.
Here's another "turntable" thread that might be helpful:
