I am making a figurine directly into a gumpaste deckchair I made using the Jem deck chair cutters. So far I have made the legs, and the chair has not collapsed (yet - ?). I'm a bit nervous. Has anyone one else tried sitting a person into a Jem deckchair? Will it hold? Will it collapse? Taking bets now!... icon_biggrin.gificon_lol.gif

Wish me luck - I have a feeling I'm gonna need it! icon_rolleyes.gif

Pending any last minute disaster I think it's going to work thumbs_up.gif Put the head on yesterday and today it's still good. (It's a man too, which means the figurine is heavier - a woman I could have made slim/light.) Assembling cake today for tomorrow so I no time to re-make now if it breaks... Fingers crossed! Will post a pic here when the cake's finished for those who were interested.

I should note (for those who might want to have a go at making a figurine into a gumpaste deck chair themselves) that I used a mixture of mexican paste and fondant (about two parts mexican paste to one part fondant) to make the deck chairs, and fondant with some gum tragacanth powder mixed in to make the figurine.

Do you mind my asking how you get such detail on the man? I am making a cowgirl (Toy Story) and nothing is coming out smooth. I add shortening to gumpaste to give me working time, bit still get cracking or wrinkles. Do you wire them as well? Do you use molds.

I wish there was a step by step tutorial for lifelike figures.

By the way, I have never taken a class, I am watching youtube videos but not having much luck.

Your work is fabulous.

Your cake turned out great. It couldn't be anymore perfect. I love all the detail. I wish I had your creativity.

I hand-model figurines (no molds) and use fondant icing mixed with a little gum tragacanth powder for strength (about 1tsp gum trag. per 500g fondant) Gumpaste does tend to dry & crack if you need to work on something longer. I used edible food pens with fine tips to draw on some details (eg the eyebrows and the pineapples on the shirt.)

That looks amazing! So neat and clean looking. I bet they were thrilled with it. I need to do a chair with a figure also. What is the Jet thing you are talking about?

A deck chair cutter set made by Jem. You can see it here, although lots of other cake deco suppliers sell it too. http://www.globalsugarart.com/product.php?id=21853&name=3-D%20Deck%20Chair%20%20(Set%20of%203)%20by%20JEM

That pic shows Jem deck chairs with an umbrella made with the Jem umbrella cutter/former set. I actually bought the umbrella set and made an umbrella to go on this cake, but in the end left it off because I thought it might look too much with the trees & ice-cream shop already on there. I was disappointed I didn't get to use the umbrella, it was cute! icon_sad.gif

Absolutely adorable!!! I got the JEM cutter for the chair and umbrella, but haven't ventured to use them yet! The instructions for the chair are a little iffy (for me at least). But I'm excited to try them out.

The chair instructions make more sense when you're working on it. I'm still yet to use an umbrella on a cake though (although I made a couple that didn't get used) - must remedy that soon!

Don't forget to post a photo when you've had a play with your new toys SheriCakes! icon_smile.gif
