I wanted to purchase Satin Ice fondant from GlobalSugarArt.com and just wanted some feedback from people who have used it. I hear that Wilton's fondant taste horrible so I don't wanna spend money on that. I have 4 important cakes to make this year bridal shower cake, grooms cake, 1st birthday cake and a guy's birthday cake and need to start my ordering soon.

Thanks

Personally it taste ok. It smells really good. I had been using Wilton up until this week. I tried working a little with Satin Ice and I think i'm in love with the look and feel of it. As far as taste goes everyones opinion around here is it doesn't matter cause they wont eat it either way. They don't like the idea of eating something chewy with cake. So I'm focusing more on how it looks.

Satin Ice has a light vanilla flavor, but it is still fondant. 90% of the cakes we make are covered with fondant, and we only use Satin Ice. Great to work with compared to most other fondant we have worked with. For the Price it is a great product. We find that many of our customers are scared of fondant. Usually the result of "their friend made a fondant cake", most likely using readily available wilton....Satin Ice has converted many a non fondant fan. Global Sugar Art is a great company as well, very friendly staff, and products always on time if not early. Good Luck!

I use Satin Ice all the time, only use Wilton for dummy cakes (it's cheaper)I just made a cake and used Satin Ice Fondant, Vanilla Buttercrem, now that is delish!! Even better than the regular Satin Ice.

I just got my first order of it this week actually. I have been using the Wilton. To be completly honest, I didn't expect the difference to be to obvious.
Satin Ice is softer, easier to chew, tastes great (I personally love the vanilla but the buttercream is nice too) and I have never covered a cake so fast! It goes right on, lays down really easy and is very smooth, not sticky.
Even without the superior taste I think it's a way better product because it's easier to use in my opinion.

In our buisness we do almost all fondant cakes. We got ours though cakesupplies 4U. The pre-tinted is a great feature too! We got the black and the red in pre-colored. That's going to save some time. icon_smile.gif

Thank you.

I personally can't stand Satin Ice. I think it smells like play dough!! The consistency also varies too much. Sometimes I get a new container and it is hard as a rock. Other times, it is too soft. But that is just my opinion.

I am with you Occther! I was using Wilton ready made and love the way it works but hated the taste. So I did some searching and EVERY ONE raves about this stuff. I had the opportunity to buy 40 lbs of this stuff dirt cheap and I fell for it (thanks to a 1x access into a restaurant supply store). I can't wait for this stuff to finish already! WAY TOO SOFT to handle and massive cracking and elephant skin. If you add shortening then its a sticky goopy mess that won't roll out. I am about to give up entirely on fondant and sharpen my buttercream skills....

I honestly do not like using it on cakes because it cracks on the corners and gets elephant skin and has a tendency to stretch really fast. I only use it for purple and red because Massa fondant just can't get the right shade when I need those deep colors.

I do use it for sugar cookies and that works well.

I've been using it for years and like it a lot. I also use PettinIce on occasions, but that stuff is really soft. Not for a beginner, IMO. Anyway, the Buttercream flavor SI is yummy and I just don't have the problems that others have reported with SI. Good Stuff!

I've only been decorating cakes for 9 months so I am definately not experienced at this....I have only been using Wilton because that is what I first learned to use and I can get it @ my local Micheal's store with a 50% off coupon, which makes the price fantastic!!! I do not think it tastes bad at all and it is quite easy to work with. I did buy some Satin Ice to try it but haven't used it yet (I tasted it and to be perfectly honest it didn't taste that much different or better then Wilton)! Personnally...this is just my opinion...Fondant is about the look (Satin Ice has a great satiny look to it while Wilton is more matte)...I mean, yes, it is on the cake so it should taste good but I have found alot of people don't really like fondant because of the texture, it adds a chewy-ness (wow, that is not a word!!) so they peel it off any way. I heard when using fondant..."let the buttercream be the star"...Meaning use a great frosting and keep the fondant relatively thin. I roll mine out to 1/8" thick. There is always the option of making marshmellow fondant (a bit of a time consuming pain in the a.. but it tastes good!!!). Lots of recipes for it on CC. It is great for covering the cake but I still use Wilton for making any decorations to put on the cake. OK, I've babbled long enough!!!

I only use Albert Ulster, never have had a problem with it, they are going to make black this year, I hope it's better than the other blacks out there. I dislike Satin Ice and I have tried it repeatedly over the years, cracking and elephant skin.

Like a few of the earlier responses, I've had mixed results with Satin Ice. Had been quite happy with it in the past, but the last large bucket I got was terrible as far as cracking/elephant skin. I ended up mixing it half and half with fondarific just to be able to salvage some of what I'd spent on it. Definetly like the taste and mouth-feel better than Wilton, just think they may have some consistency issues.
