Does anyone have experience with spoiled or old shortening? How does it taste or smell? I made Sugarshacks buttercream and it has very oily texture in mouth and it separates in mouth. I don't know if it is like this because it is spoiled or some other reason. I posted a question yesterday and but no one has answered so maybe someone can give me some info and help.

Old hi-ratio shortening will not be a solid creamy white, it will get more yellow and more translucent over time.

Spoiled shortening will have an off odor and taste.

I have half a box that is almost three yrs old. It is still white and looks fine. I think it would be pretty easy to tell by looking and smelling it.

If you made buttercream with rancid shortening it will taste slimy and it won't smell sweet. It won't have much of a smell, but if I had to choose a description, I'd say that it smells like cardboard.
