Hi All
I am just starting to look around at kitchen mixers and am wondering if anyone has any ideas on whats the best ones around? i reeeeeeeally want a kitchenaid and am willing to spend the money IF they are worth it... I've found some good and bad about them and am just wondering if anyone has any experience with one or any other mixer that you think is good with some advice for me please?? thankyou! Sarah
I love my KA. The customer service is wonderful if/when needed.
My son has my ''old'' 5 quart KA and I use the KA 600 pro. You will
be VERY happy to own one.
Cuisinart 7qt, 1,000 Watts power with a timer is what I have. I heard that KA, if they're not the high end, have plastic gears inside. Plus, you should check the watts on all the models to get an idea of how powerful they are.

I've had my KA for over 12 years and it still works like new. Not only do I use it for making cakes and frosting but breads also.. The only thing I would change is upgrading to a bigger size..
I have an old 4 1/2 qt KA from way back. Got it as a gift and its still running like a charm. The old KAs truly were proper workhorses, they could do any job! The newer KAs unfortunately are not that wonderful.
KA was bought out by Whirlpool in 1986, and the mixers have gone downhill in quality ever since. It was pretty rare to hear of a complaint on KA mixers before they were bought out. Now you hear and read complaints all the time.
I bought a KA 6 qt pro as an additional mixer, as I wanted a bigger & stronger machine for my breads, batters and icings. Unfortunately my new machine was nothing but a piece of junk! If I tried to make bread, even a two loaf recipe, it would get to the point the mixer smelled like it was going to burst into flames. I was forever having to turn it off to cool down. I kept that machine for 5 or 6 months but only used it for small jobs. After getting tired of bothering with it, I sold it for cheap.
I replaced my 6qt Pro with a 1000 watt 7 Quart Viking professional series VFM mixer over a year ago and I just love it!
I made sure I did a lot of research on both the 7 qt Viking and the 7 qt Cuisinart before deciding which one to purchase. I found good features on both machines. The timer and slow mix option on the Cuisinart almost won me over, but the sturdiness of the beater attachments on the Viking won me over completely. I found the Cuisinart beaters just too thin and flimsy to my liking.
If you truly want a KA, I sugest you visit the KA website as they sell two different 6 qt pro's. One for the home baker thats less powerful, one thats more powerful for the serious baker. I stumbled on that infromation on the KA forums. If you don't know what to look for, you'll buy the wrong one.

Good Luck!

Hi. Started doing cakes in March 2010 via Wilton Classes at craft store. Never had a stand mixer in my life. Had all the same questions as you and read a zillion reviews/comments. Hands down, no question about it, for a first time purchase: tilt-head Classic or Artisan. I ended up getting a barely used tilt-head Artisan KA, $150 USD.
Unless you are going to be baking a huge amount of stuff including breads, you are probably going to be fine with a tilt head KA, classic or Artisan. You can always pay a lot more later if you need to move up. Some buyers said the distance between countertop & cabinets needed to be measured before buying to guarantee clearance.
I strongly suggest that you wait until the holidays if you can. Last year around Christmas there were killer deals and the VERY best time is just before Mother's Day! Tilt Classic and Artisan's were going for $100-$150 off the $300 regular retail prices--and they were offering bonus free attachments! Although I LOVE my Rosie (I named my red KA), if I'd waited another month for the Mother's Day sales, I could've had any color of KA Artisan with a free $50-$70 attachment and a new warranty for about $30 more than I paid used. Oh well......sigh......
It really depends how often you will be using the mixer and how much bread you want to make at once. Also, if your new to using mixers then you should put a lot of emphasis on getting a model that is known to be very user friendly. This guide does a good job in recommending some mixers in different price ranges…
