Square Cakes? Those Very Sharp Corners..
Decorating By FarrahFace Updated 20 Jul 2010 , 1:07am by JaeRodriguez
I would like to know how to get those really sharp corners on a square cake. I have the hardest time with it. I looked on youtube and only found a couple. They weren't very good. I need a tutourial if possible. Thanks in advance for all your help..
did you get a chance to read the article here?
http://cakecentral.com/articles/109/how-to-frost-a-square-cake
metria that article is very helpful! Looks much easier and faster than the fussing around with square corners I've always done!!
FarrahFace I know what you mean about people here in NC not wanting fondant.
Sharon that cake just makes me green with envy for you technique. (Sorry I couldn't resist... must...get...sleep )
Me too!! I keep practicing....although I don't think I will ever get them as sharp as you do Sharon!
(shaking finger at you...) never say never!!! you can do it! You are not that far from it now, Lucinda, your squares are great!
sugarshack and loucinda- are your cakes then just smoothed, smoothed, smoothed or Viva method or..........????
I'll let sharon answer that - since I followed her technique! (I just still need to perfect it!)
I love sugarshacks video...squares are at the end of the buttercream one. I used smbc with all the steps from her video but the paper towel and finishing steps (since smbc doesnt crust) and this is a cake I did this laast weekend. Now the bride insisted on piped "pearls" on all the edges but trust me, those are very sharp edges under there.
Honestly I would buy the video. Worth way more than it costs
Wow - I'm generally a fondant fan but those square cakes are all amazing!! Sugarshack's green cake is just perfection though - those are the sharpest corners I've EVER seen on any cake - buttercream or fondant - awesome It makes me want to experiment with buttercream
This is fantastic advice and pics on square buttercream cakes! Thank you so much, gonna give it a go!
Is is possible to get tips on getting perfectly sharp square corners with FONDANT too? I know it is slightly off topic but I'd love to learn how!!!
Cheers!
WOW! Those are just beautiful. I am going to get some of those dvd's. What talent... Thank you all for helping me. I have my first stacked wedding cake in a few weeks and I am terrified!
Well, I done it!!! I ordered 5 of the dvd's... I am so excited.. I was looking around that website and her cakes are just flawless.. Can't wait to get my dvd's and learn all kinds of good stuff.. Thank you all for the help.. . I want all of the dvd's but I had to pick and choose.. lol
I think I have a handle on the corners...not that mine are perfect by any means, but I know how to get good sharp corners...I need more practice!
BUT...my struggle seems to be getting my cake level ALL THE WAY across the top. Especially on a larger tier. It's just so much real estate to get perfectly flat/level, and I can always see little dips and/or high spots. I use Sharon's method for getting the top smooth & level, but neeeeeever quite get it right. Again, I guess I need more practice.
Anyone got any tips on getting your top surface PERFECTLY flat/level all the way across? I'm too compulsive for those dips/high spots lol !
Nothing to add except you won't be disappointed with Sharon's videos, they're great!
Corners with buttercream are really difficult for me too. However, I just covered two square cakes in fondant for the first time and they were easier than rounds, who knew?
Loucinda, Sharon, Momma, Your cakes are BEAUTIFUL! :] I'm so happy to have people like you guys who are willing to show and share with the rest of us who haven't quite gotten the hang of things...
My hubby will flip if I buy the dvd's, I might have to ask for them as a Christmas present! :]]]
