I have been working on a hand giving the peace sign for my nieces sweetsixteen cake.. totally 60's...tye-dye etc...

This hand is supposed to "burst" through the top of the cake, giving the peace sign.

I am making it out of fruity pebble's (make it just like RKT) but tastes a whole lot better and it goes along with the tye-dye them. Then plan on covering in MMF.

The problem is the cereal mixture keeps hardening on me before I can get the whole hand formed. I put the mixture in the microwave a few times, now it is smelling scorched. So another hand gone into the garbage. I have a few weeks to practice this yet, but the sooner the better... anyone have any advice (or a helping hand icon_lol.gif ) on how to keep the fruity pebble marshmallow mixture from hardening so soon, so i can get this thing made !!!

the middle finger holds my support dowel and I swear it just keeps flicking me off!! icon_mad.gif I cant get past it to get the index finger on right.

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif it was getting a little scary with all these warped "california waving" hands on my dining room table. If I cant get this thing to work right.. Her cake is going to have a middle finger bursting out of the cake. which the niece would prefer...but mother said no. icon_lol.gif May be have to take you up on that ammo..running a little low.. been skeet shooting the weight scale. (grrr..diet)

Idea- and yes it sounds a little weird and maybe not do-able, but could you stuff the pebbles into a glove (food safe and not laytex) form the fingers and when it sets, carefully cut the glove off? If you used a large one it would give you more room to stuff. (yes, I am a blonde)

Too funny, and just so you know, I am hiding all of my ammo in case it doesn't work, oh yeah, maybe you should spray a little non-stick spray into the glove so it hopefully won't stick. DH says I am the smartest woman in the house, hmmm, I am the only one!

That wasn't a dumb idea at all, HobbyCakes. I was going to suggest it myself. I often work with deaf children who use sign language, and their end-of-the-year projects invariably involve making plaster replicas of hands signing something. One thing they've done is to use surgical gloves to get the basic hand shape! Another is to wrap a thinnish layer of moistened plaster bandages (the kind doctors use to make casts with) around their own gloved hand(s) while the hand(s) make(s) the shape of the sign they're interested in. After the cast hardens, they remove their hands and use the cast as a mold. Could RKTs be that much harder to work with?

Okay.. gave up on fruity pebble treats.. instead redid the skeletal frame and used MMF. and it WORKED !!! I have a hand !!! I am so excited. it came out great (well compared the the others icon_lol.gif ) now to let it dry for a week before painting.

thanks for all the tips. they were greatly appreciated. I learned ALOT from this little project.

Congrats! Sometimes it helps just to brainstorm with others. Glad I don't have to hide my ammo now. icon_biggrin.gif Make sure you post pics when you are done. thumbs_up.gif

Yah, that's almost creepy it's so real looking! Wait until it's painted... it will really be trippy! Which I guess is perfect for a retro 70's cake! icon_lol.gif
