First let me say I LOVE this site. I am a total amateur when it comes to cake decorating but have so much fun winging it.

On to my question: I have baked off a banana flavored cake and other than the obvious chocolate for an icing, what flavors would you suggest? I am hoping to try out some techniques I have read about and seen on here so fondant flavors are also an option.

Any help would be greatly appreciated so I don't end up with a boring Chocolate/Banana combo.

As a newbie myself, I will agree that this site is AWSOME! I hope to be close to as good as those on here.

I have used cream cheese on my banana cakes. MMMMMM is all I can say. HTH and best of luck.

How about strawberry? I've never had a banana cake but strawberry and banana go good in other things.

There was a thread a few days ago talking about a banana cake and a nutella buttercream icon_biggrin.gif

Both cream cheese and strawberry sound promising too!!

You could try a cinnamon buttercream, or a coconut frosting. How about banana split flavors...pineapple, strawberry, chocolate and nuts in a filling? I would also love a mocha filling/frosting, because I LOVE mocha!

I do a banana cake with brown sugar buttercream--we call it punuche in my family and it is everyone's fave. Melt 1/2 c SALTED butter in a sauce pan with 1 c brown sugar. Bring it to a boil and add 2 tb heavy cream. Cool, then beat in 2 c sifted powdered sugar. It is good enough to eat like candy!

I would do a cream cheese frosting flavored with ginger.

Chocolate with banana would actually not have occurred to me. icon_lol.gif

Ok, now I am more confounded than before! All these ideas sound fantastic and I want to try them all! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif I am leaning towards the banana split idea b/c I think I could do something interesting with that which will allow me to attempt some different techniques.

I have one set of cakes (went into a pre decorating baking frenzy last weekend and have 6" rounds out the wazoo) that is a mix of chocolate and banana, so maybe I'll do the "split" for that one and a cream cheese for the regular banana... decisions, decisions.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas.

Banana cake with pb frosting is by far the best. YUM!!! It is my most requested flavor next to my chocolate cake. Good luck choosing as they do all sound good.

It looks like I absolutely MUST try PB as a flavor with the cake, it honestly never would have occured to me. I put chocolate on pretty much everything so that was what first popped into my head and just refused to make room for anything else. So the Chocolate/Banana cake is getting PB and the regular Banana cake is getting "Split".

Everyone on this site is so great, I can't wait to get into the kitchen this weekend!

Tesso, Just read your Jello MMF thread, there is a good chance that recipe will be making an appearance! thumbs_up.gif

Here is the finished product.

Banana cake torted to 4 layers with SMBC in between in the following flavors: Strawberry, Chocolate w/ nuts, Pineapple.

My neighbor was the recipient so I will find out today how it went over.

Thanks for all the advice. Next, chocolate w/ PB.

Fondant "scooped" with a cookie scoop for ice cream, fondant fruit, candy melts as choc. sauce. Cherry and nuts are real. All fondant is MMF.
