I made a cake on Saturday and covered it with pink MMF. It looked fine this morning, but by evening when we ate it, the fondant had faded to a very pale pink - almost white. Anyone know why this happened? The cake also had blue and red fondant and those colors didn't fade - only the pink did. The cake was in my kitchen all day. No direct sunlight or heat close by. The pink Wilton coloring was just bought and opened about a month ago. Any ideas?

Pink does this all the time. There's some kind of background story about food safe pink dye. I'm not sure . But I do know that I always make my pink darker, because by the time the client gets the cake, the pink is at least 2 shades lighter. If anyone has any tips or different brands that don't fade, I'd love to hear about it.

If you paint the fondant with a mix of gel color and vodka, it doesn't fade the way it does when it's mixed in.

Purple also fades, and sometimes black or brown will fade.

My pink does better if I put it in a place where it gets no light at all... but it still fades a little.

It's not the purple or the brown or the black that is fading. It's the red. And since red is a primary color that is in almost every color except those in the green family, it's going to happen. I would even tiptoe up to the "always" line. (Not crossing the line ... but definitely tiptoe'ing right up to it!)

Thank you all so much. Since I have 3 sons, I rarely do pink cakes anyway icon_smile.gif I'll remeber to make it darker in the future. Thanks again!

That's what I meant, they are made with red and they will fade also.

Although I have noticed that Americolor fades a LOT less than Wilton, especially the black and super red. I never end up with green instead of black with americolor.

Do you have florescent lights in the kitchen? That will also cause fading. Pink and purple fondant are nortorious for fading.
