Ok, so most of you already know that I was the lucky winner of a cake safe (see them here www.cakesafe.com) after having a terrible disaster of a wedding cake delivery!!!

Well, I won the cake safe and Scott and Julie (the owners/creators of the cake safe) brought it to me in Ohio all the way from Rhode Island (how crazy that they drove it to me?) anyhow......I hadn't had a chance to use it since I've only had orders for little 2 tiered cakes (by little I mean like 6", 8" and 5",7" stacked cakes) so I figured there was no sense it using it on cakes that small.

Well, I got a last minute (a week ahead of time) order for a 4 tiered wedding cake and thought AT LAST...........A REASON TO USE MY CAKE SAFE!!

I won't lie, I was sooooooooooooo petrified to drive with a completely stacked cake in the car (bumpy highways with TONS of potholes here in Ohio!) and I knew the venue was up some windy hills and was 45 minutes away from my home!!

I fought with myself over letting go of the sps plates, and finally decided I couldn't let go of the sps plates LOL But I had to drill holes in the centers of them to allow the central rod of the cake safe to go through the middle of the cake.

It was the coolest thing showing up at the venue with a fully stacked cake and only having to slide it out of a box and put the topper on it!!!!

Who can say they set up a 4 tiered cake in less than 5 minutes?????????

OH WAIT...................I CAN!!! LOL

I am doing a 5 tiered cake this weekend, I have the small/tall box so it holds 4 tiers ...so i plan to travel with the 4 and add the top cake once I get there.

I am currently taking $20 out of every cake order from here on out and buying one of the big boy boxes from cake safe as well!! I am completely SOLD on this product!!!

The box feels lightweight by itself (it does have a nice heavy base on it though), it's so sturdy.......and you should have seen people's faces when they saw me walking in with the cake in a big clear box. People in the restaurant literally started following me saying "is that fake? is that a real cake? That can't be real right?" Then the people running the place were like" where did that box come from, that's amazing!!"

I didn't have the courage to tip my cake sideways LOL even though they say it can be done.........one day I'm tipping one though!!! It was also really hot and humid the day I delivered this cake.

I was so busy the whole day leading up to the delivery and was rushing to get back from the delivery for other engagements so this box saved me a TON of time and a TON of stress. the cake had ribbons on it, so I was able to completely stack, put on ribbons, etc. all before delivery!! No more travelling with a TON of supplies to touch up finger dents when I stack the cake since it can all be done before delivery.

I honestly can't say enough about these things. They are a little expensive but I seriously am buying another one vs. getting a cricut cake only because this is something I will use on EVERY wedding cake.......the cricut cake, only on some cakes....so that was my deciding factor!

Just wanted to report back to you guys since I haven't talked about it much since I initially won it (because I didn't have a chance to use it!!)

Oh and by the way, here is the cake literally 5 minutes after I arrived at the venue!!

AWESOME! I have one here that I haven't gotten to use yet. (It will get a work out in May though!) It will be on display at our Ohio ICES for anyone who wants to see one in person that will be there.

I think it is very cool that you won one of them!! icon_smile.gif I can't wait to try this one out.

I think the thing I loved the most (aside from not having to stack the cakes with 20 people watching), was that I didn't have to stand there and cut ribbon and measure it and trying not to mess up my icing, etc. with 20 people watching!! I always dread the ribbon part for some reason, my hands shake, etc. and it was just so cool to show up with the cake done!!!

I initially was charging people a $25 setup fee, which was to cover my time/effort spent assembling the cake.............well, now it is a $25 "transfer" fee...and if they don't want to pay it, then they can pick the cake up IN the cake safe themselves, BUT they have to leave a $500 deposit on the cake safe! lol
It doesn't cost that much, but I love my cake safe and don't want ANYTHING to happen to it!!

I almost can't believe I've EVER bought separate boxes for EVERY tier just to deliver them, carry them in ONE by ONE and then UNWRAP each and every cake ONE by ONE and then proceed to stack on site! I literally saved almost $10 JUST in boxes, and saved at least 2 hrs. (that's how long it would have taken me from the time I pulled up, loaded in all the cakes, unboxed, stacked, put on ribbon, gathered excess supplies, loaded my car back up with the empty boxes, etc.) so I figure the cake safe literally saved me about $30, not only with boxes, but I also put a bigger board under each cake to make it easier to pick up and then I have to put shelf liner in between the boards, and under each box in the van, etc. I didn't have to do ANY of this!!!
AND ..... I used those additional 2 hrs. to deliver 3 more cakes and was done with everything at least 4 hrs. before I had anticipated!

I totally agree....................oh and not only did they drive the cake safe something like 10 hrs. to hand deliver it to me.........but they showed up with a huge shopping bag filled to the brim with icing colors, tips, and offset spatulas, oh and even some couplers!

I think I counted something like 80 decorating tips before I quit counting........so I guarantee it was OVER 100 tips in that bag. They were all brand new and still on the cardboard cards that they are displayed on in stores you know??

I had to buy one of those hardware storage units with all the little drawers to house them all, but I also can't say enough about how wonderful it is to not have to search and search through tips when you're decorating.......not to mention that now I have enough doubles of my tips that I don't have to stop and wash out the tip to switch colors, I can just grab another one!!

They are absolutey 2 of the nicest people I've EVER met in my entire life!! I just know they're going to be millionaires one day over this invention.........coupled with the plastic sps plates, THAT cake ain't goin nowhere!!!!!! lol

Now you are making me nervous!!! I've got the SPS system headed my way for a three tier wedding cake for my friend...one we're driving from central IN to St. Paul, MN!!! I planned on driving it mostly assembled, I bought a cardboard box made for tiered cakes...but still.

Think I'll be OK?

Does the cake safe travel on airplanes successfully? I would like to purchase one, if I can take it onboard with my luggage.

I was checking out their Web site and they have a video where they used it for air travel with a cake. I didn't watch it, but you should. If you can watch YouTube videos, you'll be able to view theirs just fine (they're embedded from YouTube).

I had a HUGE cake disaster and have never since (until this weekend) travelled with another already stacked cake! I was too scared! there is nothing keeping the cake from just toppling over sideways.

With the cake safe in combination with the sps plates it would be almost impossible to destroy the cake. The sps plates are hard plastic and then there is a metal rod that connects from the top of the cake safe, down through the center of all my sps plates, since I drilled holes in the centers... and then into the base of the cake safe. There is absolutely no way to make the plates shift off of one another with the center rod going through them all and being anchored to the box itself. The only plausible way for the cake to get damaged would be if the cake itself found a way to come off of the cake circle/plate it's on (like tear away) and I can't imagine how bad the roads would have to be to cause that!! The roads I drove this cake on were horrific and because of my time crunch I went much faster than I probably should have with a cake in the car!! But everything was fine, also like I said it was a warm and very humid and sticky day and the cakes were not refrigerated at all before delivery, so we're talking warm, moist cakes and they didn't budge a millimeter!!

Also, I have the added security of the fact that the box is completely CLEAR and I can babysit my cake with my rear view mirror LOL (hey, I'm a nervous cake deliverer) if my cake were just in a big cardboard box it would have to be a "suprise" when I reach my destination as to whether or not my cake was destroyed (oddly enough, that's what happened with my disaster.....I had no idea there WAS damage until I opened the back of my van to get the cake out!)

KHalstead, you have me sold! I am so like you and am a nervous wreck with every delivery. I dread deliveries. I stress weeks before big cake deliveries. I have had nightmares about disasters. I hate the process it takes to get all the components of my unassembled cake into my car and still stress about putting it together onsite. This is the answer to my prayers! I'm contacting them today about placing an order. Hopefully I can get it before my two 4-tier wedding cakes I'm doing at the end of this month. I will be so happy to deliver a fully assembled cake and get out of there in less than 10 minutes. Thank you so much for the great info you've given. icon_smile.gif

Hey Tina- question....

What type of base do you use? Is it plywood or MDF? It kind of looks like it in the gorgeous one on top. Did you drill a hole in the base as well as your sps plates?

I've just started using those boxes and they are way cool. I have the tray bases for 14", 16" and 18" cakes, so pretty much everything fits into the boxes. I did tape the seams together, though. I can box up a three tier cake and go.
