Instructions For Making A Flag Cake?
Decorating By buttercup1016 Updated 25 Mar 2010 , 11:19pm by buttercup1016
I've seen Janet Brown's flag cakes and other cc members who did beautiful work using her instructions....but I can't seem to find those instructions ANYWHERE!!! Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm trying to do a draped American Flag and I want the stars and stripes to look really flat like cloth, not cut out and raised pieces of fondant over fondant. Does that make sense? Help!!! Thanks!
I looked and couldn't find the instructions either, but I've looked at the cakes and this is what I've come up with.
The stripes on most of those are airbrushed. I know Wilton has a sprayable color if you don't have an airbrush. Just cover the places for the white stripes and spray away. Janet's cakes have a rectangular cake with a triangular cake on top. Most of her cakes look like the stripes are on one piece which is draped first and then the blue with stars is draped on the triangle cake and over the stripes. I assume you could also make the whole flag and then drape it. If I were doing this that's how I would go about it. Just make sure the fondant is rolled thin enough that it can drape naturally without being see-through. You're only going to get one chance if you want to drape it on buttercream, so be sure of where you want to place it.
That's the best I can come up with, hope it helps.
Good Luck!
If you want them that flat then you have to use a pasta roller. If you don't have one then google a Michael's coupon then go and get one from Michael's. I think they are $24 without a coupon. Or if you have a kitchen aid you can get one from Bed Bath and Beyond for $59. Roll to at least #5. Go thinner if you can handle it but then the darker color may show through (the blue under the white stars). What I did for my last flag was place the blue square on a square of fondant. Added my stripes just making sure that there was a red one at the top of the flag and the bottom of the blue square (or however it was they are on a real flag). Since my flag wasn't "to scale" I just wanted some of the main elements correct. Add your stars, stripes and seams then fold under all four edges and you have your draped flag. This way you don't have to worry about getting the edges perfect or your stripes running all the way across. If you "unfolded" my "flag" the stripes are totally uneven on the left side since my fondant square was longer than my stripes.
Note: I later tucked that edge near the front right corner under because it didn't look quite right having the edge of the "flag" show that way.
I don't know how to reduce and attach the pic so here is the link to the flag I'm talking about:

hth.
Oh, and I airbrushed my blue square and red stripes prior to placement to add depth to the color.
CakeDiosa: Am trying to get my buttercream Flag RED and it looks more like flag brownish-darkish-red. I used a bit of Bright white to get out the yellow and used Americolor Red and it looks more like baby poop red...
How did you get your gift bag in your pix so red? I don't need a lot of Red frosting to do the whole cake in, just enough to do red/white/blue decorating.
(sorry don't mean to hijack thread, but this is for a patriotic look! )
GI: that gift bag was fondant and I just added Wilton no taste red until I got the color I wanted. Sorry, no extra special tips there.
Thanks, CakeDiosa, I did find another pix that had a "recipe" for flag red. I was able to get a close resemblance!
Thanks CakeDiosa, your cake is amazing! I am going to try it with a roller. How did you make the beads/chain for the dogtags? (I wanted to put some on this cake too) Are they a mold or did you do each bead individually? Thanks again!!!
