Hello,
I would love to make a "slice" cake, not sure where to start? Is this difficult, especially for a beginner?
Would love to know how to do this....any step by step instuctions? I have a cake coming up in April for a 10 yr old birthday girl. Would love to do something different and surprise her!
Thanks in advance!

Slice cakes from the CC galleries:

http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&meta=search&type=full&search=slice&album=19&search_user=&pageID=1

If you pick a cake you like and then ask questions, it will be easier to help. icon_smile.gif

Naw..I'm a hobby baker. Shoot, it's taken me 3 1/2 years to get to the point where I have had 2 pages of cakes to post here! On one hand I cuss because I don't get enough practice to get really good at things. BUT, on the other hand I think I'd cuss if I had cakes to do all the time and I was struggling with my perfectionism all the time!

I am a hobby baker as well, I love decorating cakes and am self taught.
It is allot of fun and is relaxing until the fondant cracks or the cake breaks
then it's cussing time....lol(no kiddies in the room though)....lol

Hails...well then, there's one benefit to having my youngest be 18. He cusses way more than I do. Although, he still laughs when he catches me at it!

I am assuming you bake the cake and cut one slice out of the cake. Then you fondant the bottom tier. Because the cake is no longer round how do you get the fondant into the missing slice?! Is there a cut into the point or did you drape it in their first then around the back of the round cake?
Then I assume you treat the slice of cake like a regular cake that would sit on top. Fondant it and dowel it?
Sounds easy enough but I know it's not!
BTW I love the banter....Hee!
This may be too difficult! You are all perfection bakers/decoraters....I am just a beginner!
All of your cakes keep me thinking and dreaming at night!

By the way, it's my 4 yr old who is running in the room trying to sneak in some icing or fondant and maybe grabs something for her 8 yr old sister!

King-Girlz....this is how I did it. It's entirely possible the pros do it differently, but maybe one of them will chime in with a better method.

I filled and stacked the cake, trimmed the sides then crumb coated and put it in the fridge to harden a bit. I used Swiss Meringue Buttercream. I took it out and I cut out a fairly large slice and put it on a 9 inch cardboard round. I iced all the areas that were uncovered when I cut out the slice, smoothed it and put it all back in the fridge.

Since I didn't want the cardboard round to show on either cake, I took an exacto knife and carefully removed the cardboard where I had cut out the slice, and cut around the slice of cake, so it didn't have any cardboard showing around it. I placed the slice on another 9 inch round, just so it would be easier to move around.

The fondant is pale pink (the color in that photo was a bit off because I took the photo under the kitchen light). After I rolled out the fondant and laid it on the cake, I quickly smoothed the top then took my exacto and did a rough cut when the fondant was falling in (where the slice was missing) leaving about 1/2 inch of fondant., there

Once that weight was gone, I finished smoothing the fondant onto the rest of the cake. To fondant the inside of the slice, I rolled out white fondant to the height of the cake and about the length I needed. I folded it over a skewer and used the skewer to fit that fondant into the point of the missing slice. I used my smoother as much as I could, and also used my offset spatula to be sure the fondant was adhered. I used scissors to trim it at the top, tucking it under the pink fondant overhang I had left. If I do another one, I'll put that fondant on FIRST. Then I trimmed the pink top fondant and smoothed it a bit.

To do the slice, I did do the white fondant first. I rolled out a rectangle, applied it to the sides, smoothed it and trimmed off the excess. When I did the pink I just rolled out another rectangle, laid it on the slice and trimmed off the excess.

To do the hot pink layers of filling, I just rolled out snakes of fondant, applied them to the cake (again, that skewer helped get it into the point) and just pressed with my fingers to give it shape.

I used two bubble tea straws to support the slice and then used a skewer all the way to the cake board to help make sure it didn't go anywhere! icon_biggrin.gif

I hope that made some kind of sense!

Jodie,
I have always loved these cakes but never tried one. Now with your help I might just give it a shot. Can I ask another question? What is that fabulous covering that you are using on your cake board? I love it and it looks so simple ..much easier than covering in fondant.

It's just wrapping paper, covered in clear contact paper. The cake is on it's cardboard round. I use double sided tape to stick it down. Easy peasy!

Good luck!

It's not hard to do. If you think about it a bit you'll be able to figure it out. Treat it like any tiered cake.

thank you for the info! I've been wanting to try this too! I was wondering tho.. what if you covered the whole cake with fondant fist & then cut the slice out..so at least past of the sliced cake is already covered. would that work to?

Ya know...honestly...that never occurred to me to try! Sure....why wouldn't that work?
It's a fun cake to do and the nice thing is it could be made for any age.
