Help! My husband is lactose intolerant, and my daughter was just diagnosed with a soy allergy. I had been making icing with crisco, but that's all soybean oil. I use Olivio spread. Has anyone ever tried that in icing? Or have another idea? Margarine is soy as well.
Valerie
how intolerant is your husband. There are different degrees of intolerance so he maybe able to handle alittle butter in the icing, as long as he isn't sitting down with a spoon and the bowl it might be okay.
How about a nice 7 minute frosting:

In case anyone recommends Rich's non-dairy icing, it won't work as it contains both milk protein and soy.
Rich's Bettercreme ingredients:
Rich's (Vanilla) Bettercreme:
High fructose corn syrup, water, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, contains less than 2% of the following: *sodium caseinate, (a milk derivative), soy protein concentrate, polysorbate 60, carbohydrate gum, sugar, salt, artificial flavor, soy lecithin, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids, to preserve freshness (potassium sorbate), xanthan gum. *Not a source of lactose.
And Cool Whip also contains milk protein:
