I usually do not comment on cakes I look at unless I am really impressed by them. It's not that I don't want to make comments, but I'm not a very fast typist, and if I'm just looking for ideas it would take me forever to look at cakes. I will not leave a negative comment on a cake. I am not a good enough decorator to make a negative comment about another persons cake.
I understand how you feel though. Comments from your fellow CCer's mean a lot.

I try to leave a comment on a cake each time I look at one, I think it's what makes this site so unique and special. Comments are what we are all looking for, a little reconition, a pat on the back for all the hours in the kitchen, especially for us home bakers. Encourgement from others keeps us striving to do better. Learning from each other, thats what keeps us coming back. One of my New Years resolutions is to comment more, and show my appreciation for all that each of us contribute to this site and to each other.

I feel the same way! I get really bummed when my cakes get 100's of views and either no comments or if lucky 1 or 2.

If i take the time to *click* on a cake picture - then i do leave a comment.

I like to think that there is something beautiful in everybodies creation -
And to leave a postive note for them is encouragement to do more -

I don't think anyone of us is that perfect that we can tear shreds or leave unfavourable comments.

Some may ask for suggestions - and as long as they are constructive - then yes - a suggestion is in order.

Just last night i saw somebodies first 6 inch cake that had beautiful piped roses on top that were edged with gold -
I was in awe of them, because for their first attempt the flowers looked stunning....so i told them. icon_smile.gif
If the OP had not mentioned that they were her first piped edged flowers - one would never have known....thats how good they were.

Why not, instead of griping about the lack of comments like needy children, be glad that people thought your cake was interesting enough to warrant a closer look?

Anyways,
How about we each comment on 5 pictures a day. Preferably ones without any comments? Of course if you see one that you just have to say "you are amazing" then of course do it lol, but lets give people at least 1 comment on thier pictures?

This subject is brought up with regularity.

There's quite a list of previous threads on this subject:

Just a few quick tips... If you wish to receive comments, it's wise to periodically check your profile to make sure "comments" are enabled.
(Trust me on this.)

If you see a cake you'd like to comment on, but comments aren't enabled - please pm the member (a link to the photo would be a nice touch) advising the member of the situation.

HTH

P.S. When I had dial-up ISP, it was impossible for me to comment on cake photos because it took such a long time for the pictures to load...

Comments to me are not as important as views & favourites. I like to cleanse my photo albums here periodically, removing those with few views or favourites - I find it quite cathartic, plus I'm not taking up CC space with less interesting cakes thumbs_up.gif . I haven't done it in ages, and as I have 10 pages of cakes, it's probably time for a spring clean again!

*shakes head*

Many people on this site are busy with life and cakes. If they are scanning for ideas, often there isn't time to say "WTG" on every picture, or perhaps a cake wasn't quite what they thought it would be once the image is larger. I'm with Mensch... take it as a compliment that someone bothered to take a closer look. That's what I do.

I love getting picked for faves and receiving comments and if someone takes the time to leave me one, I really appreciate it! However, I don't feel obligated to leave a comment on every view unless I really like the cake and have something to say. I leave comments more often than not, though. I think I would be a bit bummed if someone left me a 'constructive comment'. I am critical enough of my own work. But to each their own! icon_biggrin.gif

I really like to get positive comments too and always make it a point to comment on anything I put in my Favs. What I can't understand is when a pic has for or five favs and no one has bothered to make a comment. It doesn't take THAT much time.

I don't understand why this topic keeps coming up. And I really don't get the need to have people comment on every photo. I see a lot of pictures but I'm not gonna stop and comment on every one. If there's a cake (or cookies, cupcakes, etc.) that I find particulary well done or intriguing to me, then I'll comment (and probably put into my faves as well), but I'm not going to post fake comments just to booster someone else's ego and I would hope that others aren't doing that to me. I don't find that helpful.

I fear if I got truly honest comments on my photos I may not like what others might say so I'm totally happy not getting a bunch of comments - LOL!

I would rather have zero comments than the "obligated" ones I know I get sometimes by those CC gallery peeps that "must" make comments as part of their job description. Do those obligated comments really make you feel good? They don't me. I am more flattered by views and saved numbers. Skip the obligated comments for me. I know this is a heated conversation and wish I didn't jump in..but this is MY personal opinion.

Agree totally with all of the above. Actions speak louder than words and looking/saving says way more than nice.

agree. I have saved a number of pics when Im looking for a specific idea. (one day, I saved something like 8 drum set pics to show my neighbor.) Sometimes, after the cake is done, I will unsave them because I dont need them anymore. (As I did with the drum set cakes.)

Brides access this site looking for ideas and they may save pics for the same reason. I also have seen cakes that werent what I thought they were when I got the bigger pic. Surely you dont want me to post Oops! Not as great as I thought it would be! do you? icon_confused.gif

If looking means one HAS to comment, then what will happen is less looking.

I appreciate any comments I get. But my entire self-worth isnt dependent on them

I agree with Debi. I love that people have looked at them and favorited them. OH, I love comments too but would much rather have a favorite than a comment. I may save pictures because it's something I have coming, like a car or a mickey mouse, but after it's done, I'll unsave it's done. There are just so many cakes and such a limited amount of time, I'm happy that people have looked at them.

I need to clean out some of my photos too. Also, I'll put cakes out there that I know may not be commented or favorited very much but it might give someone else an idea if they have to do something like that.

Debi nailed that one on the head! I enjoy getting comments and PM's about my cakes, but I'm not devistated if I don't get any. It's my choice to post a pic, if someone likes it great, if the don't, that's fine as well.

I completely 100% agree with this statement. I have at least two pictures that I have uploaded that have the exact same "comment". It annoys me and feels obligatory, if someone wants to make a genuine comment, then please do so. But comments like "nice job" are just to make a comment. I would must rather have a favorite than a comment =).

Damned if you say "nice job", damned if you don't say "nice job".

This is the most tiring subject ever.

If you have something you absolutely MUSTt showoff, start a thread about it. Call it "My First Fondant Cake Ever"

Then you can post "My Second Fondant Cake Ever"

Soon enough....you'll have bazillions of comments. And a blog dedicated to your awesomeness.

I'm with Mensch & ddaigle. Not to mention it can be frustrating to comment. People ask for comments & then get upset that the only comment they recieve is "nice job". Your damned if you do & damned if you don't. I think of one thread that was started on this subject. The OP was upset cause she didn't receieve a lot of compliments on a cake she had just uploaded and felt like what was the point of sharing photos. Well, when you looked at her photos, the cake she was talkiong about had been favortited at least 10 times and had about 15 comments. But that wasn't good enough for her. Did I mention she also had about 3 pages worth of photos, 95% of her cakes favorited and at least 10 comments for each. I will support as best I can, but seeing as how we all are adults, I won't stroke your ego or baby you.
