I thought they just carved it to look like a book and cover it with fondant.....I guess I don't know either....this will keep it going out there.....icon_smile.gif

What do you mean by cover???? I have made them to look like an open book. Or do you mean a closed book?

i've make a few books and i just roll out a thick piece of fondant and cover the rectangular "book", leaving a 1/4 "edge" around the side, bottom, top and spine. then make 1/4 in. strips of fondant and put it around the base of the cake on the cakeboard to look like the back cover. let me know if you need more instructions on this icon_smile.gif

I'm trying to make a closed book tannersmom....I can't figure out how to get the cover to wrap all the way around the book...ie how do I get it underneath the book?

i can't see any pics right now for some reason, but...

for the closed book, you can either measue your cake width, spine width and width again...add up the inches and add 1/2 inch to that. then take the height of the book and add a 1/2 to that. cut out a piece of fondant that big and put your cake on the right side of it, leaving 1/4 inch around the side, top and bottom...then flip the rest of the fondant over the spine and top.

or just do what i said earlier and cut a piece big enough to cover the spine and cover of the book...tuck the fondant under the spine a bit. then cut 1/4 inch strip of fondant and put it around the base to give the illusion that there's a whole piece of fondant underneath, when you really don't need to.

That is what I did when I made mine. I covered the pages part first, cutting each side individually, I wanted a crisp corner. Then I used a pizza cutter with light pressure to make intentions, making it look like individual pages. Then cut the fondant big enough to cover the top and binding, tucking under a little bit and leaving 1/4 in for overhang. Then cut strips about 1/2 inch thick, so I could tuck it under the bottom so it looked like it was actually covered, not just sitting next to the cake. I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt. Here is a picture.

Oh you can't spoil it....he will love it no matter what. This is something I have learned, they always love it, even when you hate it. That cake there had so many problems along the way, but in the end the birthday girl was happy and so was everyone at the party. They never see your mistakes!!!

I know what you mean about the pictures being down....so frustrating. I am very happy I am not trying to do a cake right now, I rely on this site for inspiration all the time, I would be stuck to my own imagination.... SCARY!!!!

Can't help you on the Harry Potter cake... I am one of the few people on earth who hasn't really seen it. I say the first one once, but fell asleep...so sad!!!

Good luck to you and enjoy the process, learning is my favorite part...and I still have ALOT to learn...I'm a newbie!!!!
