Quick! Question About Pan Sizes And Number Of Servings
Decorating By shannonlovebug Updated 20 Jul 2010 , 10:02pm by Amberly10
What size is a half sheet (I know, I should know this but I do mostly rounds and squares) and how many does it serve (party)?
Next question...how many does the Wilton 3-D car serve?
I've got a gal waiting to hear back asap so any help would be greatly appreiciated!! TIA!
I can't help with the car pan but here is Wiltons Party Servings.
I think a 1/2 sheet is the 11 X 15?

Look at the sheet cakes. Don't use words like half sheet, go by sizes/servings since 99% of the people out there don't know what size a half sheet really is.
Most of Wilton's pans shaped pans use one cake mix and serve between 12-15 depending on how big you cut the slices.
I agree totally with Texas..... stop using terms like "half" and "full" sheet. When I have someone ask "how much is a half sheet?", I'll turn it around to them and ask "how big a cake is that?" and they'll tell me "I don't know."
They just ordered a cake and they have NO IDEA how big it is?
They say "I want a a half sheet" .... you say, "How many people do you need it to serve?" then go from there. Do NOT start using half and full size to describe your cakes sizes.
Just for your own education, commercial baking sheets are 18x24. Cut these "full sheets" in half and you get two 12x18 sheets (aka "half sheets"). Cut these half sheets in half yet again and you get four 9x12 (quarter sheets). I think wilton just threw in the 11x15 to screw with everyone's mind!
Note: I've noticed the grocery stores are labeling 11x15's as "half sheets". So if you have a customer who says, "well the grocery's half sheet is only THIS much!" you can honestly tell them, "yeah, but that's NOT a half sheet!" Since cake makers tend to call the sizes whatever they feel like calling it, there's almost no uniformilty anymore and customers can't compare apples to apples.
Saw one thread in which a CC'er posted, "The 11x15 is the biggest one I can fit in my oven, so I call that a full sheet." WHAT? You can't just make up whatever the size is and expect to be uniform in the industry. (And, bluntly, not look like a fool while you're making it up.)
Figuring the number of servings is simple math. A standard serving size for a single layer is 2x2x2. So if a cake is 12x18 and you're going to cut 2" pieces, this means you're going to cut it in 6 rows by 9 columns = 54 servings. If you're going to cut the pieces 2x3x2, then you'll cut the cake in 6 rows by 6 columns = 36 servings. Just "Do the Math"!
indydebi - Thank you for the Great info!
How do you figure your servings for round cakes? I've heard a 10 inch serves about 20-25 - also, I'm not sure if this was counting on it being cut in regular slices or like wedding cakes. I want to make sure I have enough with a little extra
Thanks,

Here's the wilton wedding chart, which most of us (and venues) use to determine servings (and to set our pricing): http://www.wilton.com/wedding/wedding-cakes/wedding-cake-data.cfm
Here's my website page on how to cut a cake (round or square) to achieve those servings: http://www.cateritsimple.com/id10.html
Here's pics of cut pieces of 1x2x4 pieces of cake, so you can see they are nto "paper thin": http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1156785
Indydebi - THANK YOU for the pics of a better way to cut a cake! I'm new to this cakey world and HATE the circle routine. It's messy and feels like there should be a better way. Apparently, there is. (grumble...wish I wuz smart enough to think of it myself ).

Me too thanks to all the experts for your help!!!
Hey, this is pretty neat! I was helping someone who emailed me about how to find a cake cutting comb, and while searching for places where she could find this, you wouldn't believe how many cake websites I found that have my cake cutting guide on them! You can't believe how complimented I am by that!
IndyDebi
That is a huge compliment! You give such good advice I love reading your ideas! So... Where do you find a cake comb?
Indydebi...Thank you so much for the round cake cutting guide!! I HATED cutting round cakes and have a tiered round cake due soon. This makes my life so much easier!!!!!
