I'm completely new at cupcake decorating and I really want to make swirls like these but I'm not sure what tip to use. I read on a forum that you could make them using a 1 M tip and a star tip but then somebody told me that there are open and closed star tips! :O
I want swirls like these:

It would really help if I knew what tip to use and the method. Please and thank you! icon_smile.gif

I have a tip 101 from Wilton and I tried making petal flowers with it, the flower with five petals, but mine's didn't even look like a flower. It was more like a blob icon_sad.gif Any tutorials for using tip 101?

JanH is right, tip 1M is the way to go. 1M is a big tip and you may want bigger bags to use with it.

But I just looked on the Wilton site and the picture they've got of 1M doesn't look like the 1M that I bought a year ago. My 1M looks more like the 2D on this page: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E30C43E-475A-BAC0-5A98A942A7BBD164&fid=3E33259E-475A-BAC0-55E3E367DCB3BBD1 I'll have to look again when I go to Hobby Lobby and see if they've changed the 1M, now I'm curious.

Living in Australia means that Wilton stuff is few and far between, so I've found that you can get awesome cupcake swirls using a fluted pastry tip. Here, they're made of plastic and fit into any bag. And they're cheaper too! Happy swirling.

I had to look it up on youtube to see how it was done. She uses the 1M tip in this video.

I just made my first 1M swirl on cupcakes earlier this week for Thanksgiving! Yay for cuppies!

off topic here...

but how did ya'll upload the images?

They're a wonderful size and they're not followed by that annoying empty extra frame.

I always use the img tag and link to an image that's already posted on the internet. I've never tried adding an attachment ... let me see ...

Yes ... adding attachments do those empty tables for some reason. My other post looks like this in the edit mode:

found this on another post:

I'll have to play with that. It didn't use to do that...it was after the last crash and/or during a heavy upgrading period that it's now the way it is....

Gawd I love this site. I have never seen/used a closed star tip and LOVE the look it gives - I adore my beloved 1M but I just have to get that tip - off to Michaels yet againicon_smile.gif

Can someone tell me what the tip is on the lower right that makes the smooth swirls?
