I've had a lot of requests for the recipe and instructions for how to make the halloween finger cookies I've posted here on cc, I've decided this is the best way to share this so that as many of you can hopefully have as much fun as we did making these! good luck!

1 c. butter (NO substitutes), softened
1 c. powdered sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. almond extract
2 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
red decorating gel
sliced almonds

In mixing bowl, cream butter & sugar. Beat in egg & extracts. Combine flour, baking powder & salt, add gradually to mixture. Cover & refridgerate for 30 minutes or until easy to handle. Roll into 1inch balls, shape that into 3 inch by 1/2 in "finger" shape. Using the flat tip of a butter knife, make an indentation on one end of each for fingernail bed. With knife edge, make 3 slashes in the middle of the finger for "knuckle". Place 2" apart on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake @325 degrees for 20-25 mins or until lightly browned. Cool for 3 minutes. Squeeze a small bit of gel on nail bed, press an almond over the gel, allowing gel to ooze around the "nail". Let cool completely on wire racks. Makes about 4 dozen.

PS. I've also experimented with putting in a little coconut extract instead of the almond extract and it came out great!

Thanks so much for sharing. I did see these by Martha Stewart online, but I do have to say that I thought yours looked better. LOL. They don't at all look like a cookie! Great job! Wish me luck, I will be making them next week. Can only hope they turn out as well!

Cookiemama we think alike! lol i titled mine on here and FB "finger food". Thanks Ioda for the tutorial.

I wish there was a way to make these taste a little better. Nothing wrong with the recipe, this must be a basic sugar cookie recipe because these taste exactly like the ones my mother used to bake when I was a kid for us to decorate. I've never been fond of the flavor but i understand these ingredients are necessary for them to keep their shape.

How does subway get their sugar cookies to taste so good?

oh and where are you all finding sliced almonds?? we had to slice them ourselves which was a horrible task and they didnt come out nice and flat like yall's I think next time I will just buy a box of honey bunches of oats and steal the almond slivers!

I'm wondering if we can use the NFSC recipe for the cookies?? NFSC recipe does not lose its shape when baking....and they taste really good.

Lizzycakes.....you might want to try trader joes for the almonds. They have a lot of various nuts there and I'm sure you might find something there.

icon_sad.gif we don't have Trader Joes in Houston (to my knowledge)" lol but i guess it would work for me to just get them out of the cereal box, I love Honey bunches of oats, and I don't like nuts, so it works perfectly

hmm what is NSCF, I love store bought sugar cookies so if they taste like those, I would love to try it. I have never even made cookies before this other than my beloved boxed cake mix cookies from Paula Dean, Everyone loves them, but they stay soft, so theyre not appropriate for this.

I was thinking of a piece of gum(white square).
More of a glamorous finger. Still love the ragged nail look!

I get sliced almonds at the grocery store or we have a cookie outlet store and they sell them.

okay ladies, thanks for all your info.

I have a question: have you iced those cookies at all? or are they just biscuit with the red gel icing? The colouring on them is fabulous.

After showing the kids the photo, I last week, I have had nothing but nagging, so I am going to give in.

I also have to do something different as a nail, still thinking on that one, as we have nut allergies to deal with.

Thanks again for posting this fabulous creation..

I'm in the process of trying this recipe/idea for the first time. I'm going to assume the flour that is used is All Purpose since you are adding baking powder to mixture. That is what I'm going to use. What type of flour do you use?

Thanks, Kim

I used regular all purpose flour. These were super quick and easy to shape. One of my helpers had never baked anything before, and he ended up doing great with no need for supervision

I have looked all over for thinnly sliced almonds and cannot find them anywhere. I can find whole almonds, slithered almonds and medium to thick sliced almonds but none that can pass for fingernails. Does anyone have any ideas for almond substitutes? I tried fondant but it looked too girly, like Barbie doll fingers. Thanks!

Perhaps fingernails that look like polished or decorated nails?
Just paint them with icing?
Maraschino cherries trimmed to fit?
