I had to cancel a bday cake for this wknd bcause my son is very sick. He tested positive for the flu...H1N1 to be exact. He is getting better already but I didnt want to risk infecting anyone, so I explained this to the customer. Then she goes & posts it on FB! I am so Mad! I dont think I ever want to deal with this person again! icon_mad.gif

That was really wrong! You were only thinking of her. Is there any way to delete the comment? I know nothing about FB.

I am so sorry she did that to you and hope your son recovers quickly! I'll be thinking of your family.

Be glad to be rid of her, what a jerk. Would she rather you gave her and all her guests the flu??? Put her on the "no more cakes" for you list. You should also post on FB and all your mutual friends will see that your son has h1n1 dont mention her but say something like" I'm so disappointed I had to cancel a cake order for the weekend because my son has h1n1, luckily he is on the mend, but I couldnt risk infecting my customer and her guests"
They'll see you're not the bad guy and will probably think she's a jerk for not caring about her guests.

Erk! I would be mad too. She surely did not consider the possible impact on your business when she did this - do you think you could email her and carefully ask her to remove her post? You could also point out that you told her this in confidence.

Glad to hear your son is improving - I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Thank you so much Lenette. Unfortunately I cant delete it because it is her post, not mine. I wouldnt be so mad if she didnt specifically identify me. Its not that Im ashamed, its just the flu! I just think it was very inappropriate. She had to know I would see it.....I dont understand what she ws trying to accomplish??

First, I'm really sorry about your son, it so hard to see our little ones sick.

Did you offer your customer any alternative? Help arrange another cake artist, provide a list of professionals that you know can produce a quality product for her?

If you just dropped her, she's probably pretty annoyed. Getting anything more than a grocery store cake with only 48 hours notice is really difficult.

I think you were right to be concerned about spreading the flu, and she was wrong to post on Facebook. But I do think you need to understand the situation you have you have left her with. It probably would have been better to explain your concerns to her and let her decide whether or not to have you go forward with the cake.

This is probably a good time to build your network of cake buddies, who can help you out in an emergency; and who you can help out. It can go a long way to protecting your name and business when emergencies arise.

Are you friends with her on FB? Can you comment on her status? Maybe put something like you are sorry and didn't want to risk her and all the guests getting the H1N1!

I need to build a network of cake buddies for these situations. I felt terrible about canceling but I asked the dctr & he said NOWAY!

Your cakes are gorgeous! A network would be great, I have a few places around here I can send ppl to if I have to.

Maybe you could put something on your website saying that you reserve the right to cancel a cake order due to unforseen events....?

That quote is exactly what you should comment on her FB. Make her friends think , Gee what a B**** for not understanding that her son is sick! Im sure that some of her FB buddies would be attending her event and are very glad that they will not be exposed to H1N1! You will probably get many sympathetic responses, just as you have here! I'm sending prayers for your son's quick recovery icon_smile.gif

Working in the Medical Records field, I hope she knows that by posting confidential medical information on Facebook, that she is in violation of HIPPA regs, and can get into serious trouble for that. You just might want to bring that to her attention thumbs_up.gif I truly hope your son gets better- what she did was really rotten, not to mention illegal!!!

lol, sort of like the "cake thugs" that were mentioned in that wedding article? I think we all need black leather aprons with spikes on them!

OP, this is awful. I would comment on the post and very professionally say you are sorry that you had to cancel on her, but under the advice of your son's doctor, it would be impossible to produce the cake without the risk of infecting the guests. If she deletes the comment or says something snarky, be done with her. Its understandable she's disappointed, but she doesn't need to act like a toddler over it.

I wouldnt' worry too much about being nice about it. Your son is SICK with a contagious disease and she's being all wanky about it?????? icon_confused.gif

My attitude is "She drew first blood, not me." icon_twisted.gif

If she wants everyone to know was a dumba$$ B*tch she's being, I'd be happy to help her out. icon_twisted.gificon_rolleyes.gif

It absolutely breaks my heart that you would be there worried to death about your son and this horrible flu, and instead of focusing on pampering him, you have to defend your 'honor' so to speak. This woman is obviously very disappointed, and cannot see past the tip of her own nose to realize what you're going through. Some people are so convinced that they are the only ones that things 'happen to', you know? She doesn't see a woman with a potentially deathly ill child cancelling a cake to save her customer from exposure to this virus. She sees an irresponsible baker letting her personal life affect the quality of her work ethic, and screwing HER out of her cake for the most important party of the year!! (You selfish little turd, you!!)

Remember one thing... you care about others. She is not quite as considerate. Good things will come your way, and poop rolls downhill. I do have to admit though, if it were me, I'd post a comment on her post that said, "Mrs Brown, I'm so sorry to have disappointed you. I just didn't feel the guests of your party would appreciate being served a cake with H1N1 contamination. I would like to extend a ten percent discount on a replacement cake at a later date. Thank you for understanding." This makes you look like the wonderful, caring person you are, and she'll look like an inconsiderate dolt!

Whew, sorry for the lecture. icon_lol.gif

if you go to the upper right side of her post a drop down will come down and you can hide all post fromher, so no one will see it and you will have no more contact with her........my neice has H1N1 also and it is no light matter..

You know it really is a shame that she is so self absorbed. Just sad really, it speaks to the kind of person she is.

You take your energy and focus on your child. Don't waste any more of your time on her or her selfishness. Your son is far more important.

I'm pretty sure it only hides it on your wall. The mean lady's post will still be on her wall and any mutual friends. But I could be wrong.

It is her facebook page and it is certainly her right to complain on it if she wants to. I can understand her frustrations if she is left looking for a cake with such notice; although she is immature and short-sighted not to realize you did this in her best interest. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. At most she only has a 100-200 friends who wil read the complaint and only a few of them would be local, potential customers. Much less impact than when someone smears your name over mutliple review sites.

BTW this is not a HIPAA violation. She is not your son's healthcare provider and is free to tell anyone she wants that he has flu.

I certainly can not understand her "frustrations"! I mean, My GOD! If it was a bakery and they said everyone in the bakery has ebola virus, do you think I'm gonna get pissed off because I have to cancel my measly little cupcake order and then start smearing them? Uh uh, I'm gonna praise the Good Lord that I didn't find out too late! I would much rather go to Walmart and buy a cake for my kid out of the case, than to risk their health so I can brag to all the moms on the block that I got a specialty cake!
Clearly this woman is a cry baby and she "ain't got the sense God gave a goose" (as my dear grandmother would say) to go and post comments on her FB about a woman who cares more about her family and friends than she herself does. I say good riddance to bad rubbish! HIPPA violation or not, it is in extremely poor taste to post about this for everyone to read just so they might feel sorry for her stupid butt!
