I want to make a cake using cutouts. I like the damask cake that is featured on Global Sugar Art but would rather not do the stencil but do the cut outs. Is this even possible? Do they make cutters and if so where do I find them. I check on the sites I can think of but no luck. Am I looking for the wrong item - Damask Cutters? Thanks

There aren't any damask cutters available, just the stencils.

There are cutters, I have several sets. Global has them, I have some Stephen Benison, some by Sugarshack....they are all gorgeous. You can take a regular stencil like the floral explosion set I used on the black and white and very carefully (and wrap your arm, cause it's gonna hurt after about an hour) with very pointy and very sharp Exacto knives AND semi dried GP cut them out. That's how this person did it: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WgYFFhw7dcs/SLLT8L3L99I/AAAAAAAAAjs/Wkufu_eDBzY/s320/black+damask+cake.jpg

I forgot her name, but she was super helpful when I asked her about her FLAWLESS cake.

Not entirely true. There are scroll cutters when arranged correctly and paired with other shapes make what most people just call damask.

I was referring to the damask style as set forth in the stencils, not sets of cutters that have to be arranged (which are more often than not referred to as lace cutters, not damask, which is a specific pattern.)

I guess you could probably download them to a Cricut too. I wonder if you could call it a cutout at that point. icon_cool.gif

Check out Stephen Benison. Fiesta cakes (not sure if that is the name but they sold topsy turvy pans at ICES and Cake Camp) and Cakes by Ximena has them. Just email them incase they are not on their website. Oh and I belive Jennifer Dontz has a similar cutter.

still looking to find the cutters. I am not having any luck on the sites. I don't know which ones to piece together and get the look. I am going to try to circut the pattern tomorrow and see if that will work. I am beginning to think the stencil would be easiest but DD has a plan and thought going on this. Thanks all for your helpd!

I made this cake for my cousin's engagement. http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1471337

I enlarged the pattern that was on her invitation and printed it out on cardboard. Then I used a craft knife and cut it out. It took ages! I then used the stencill I had created and laid it on top of the fondant I had rolled out and cut it out with a sharp knife. Then I held the stencil up on the cake to help me work out how to attach it. It was actually very easy in the end. The hardest part was cutting out the cardboard stencil but I have kept it so that I can remake it in the future if need be. Also, when I cut the pieces out, I actually turned them over so that the flattest, smoothest bit was the side you could see.

melnick that is a pretty cake. Thanks for the idea.

I remember one on here that used all kinds of other cutters and did a placement to make a damask cake. I am looking for it to see if I then can find the cutters. I also looked thru my stuff to see if I already had anything. DD is really set on this idea. She wants the damask to arch a bit for dimension. Love the idea but searching for the stuff only gets me wanting more and more! icon_redface.gif

I want to do a fondant damask design as well. Thanks all for the great tips on either crafting myself and/or finding cutters online.

Here is a picture of a cake using the filagree lace cutters pictured in my last post. I don't know who made it, so I can give them credit for this beautiful design. It may have been Jennifer Dontz, but I am not sure.

My DD is in love with these cakes. She is now having a hard time deciding on how she wants it. At first, she liked the more detailed damask, now she is thinking less is more. Thank you all for helping me find these. I am so happy!

I have the filigree lace cutters also. Love them! This is a cake I did using the set. The cutters were used on the top and bottom tiers.

jlwnnw - I am so glad you found what you are looking for. I just received these cutters and haven't had a chance to use them yet. They are expensive, but you can do so much with them. Be sure to post a picture of your cake.

uniqueask - thanks for giving Sharon credit for her cake

TitiaM - your cake is absolutely stunning. I love the chocolate and green together and what you were able to do with these cutters. How did you do the center section of your cake?

Diane706 - thanks for the picture of your cake.

WOW, TitiaM, I love your cake and the design you created with the cutters. In to my favs for sure. Hope you don't mind if I "steal" that arrangement idea. I'm always thinking up and looking for different ways to use my cutters. I promise to give you credit! icon_wink.gif Did you place with that cake since it was a contest? I surely hope so!

Thank you guys so much, it was a fun cake.

joanne1944--I used a sugar gun with the smallest disc (for hair) then lined up all the strands in a row and stuck them to the back of a knife and attached them with a little water. I had to do it in small sections all around the cake--pain in the neck, but the effect is cool.

Uniqueask--the flowers on that cake are dogwood. I got the cutter at global. I made the centers, kind of like a daisy and clipped them with cuticle sissors to make them kind of rough looking and dusted them with gold. They are pretty easy to make, if a bit more fragile than some of the other flowers I've worked with.

Diane706--Your cake is stunning! I love it icon_biggrin.gif Sure, use it, have fun! I did win with the cake--first place in foreign technique wedding cakes, tiered cakes, best use of color, and something else, I'm not sure... Thanks for asking (oh, and I may "steal" parts of your design too--thanks!) icon_wink.gif
