Good morning fellow CCers!! This is being posted for everyone, but shooting at all us "inexperienced non-busy(ha) homebakers. Don't know if you have heard about Free Cakes For Kids, but it is a non profit group that donates cakes for underprivilege kids birthdays. One lady started it in GA, and they need volunteers for cakes. Google Free Cakes For Kids and check it out. You don't have to be an expert and the main objective is to get every kid a birthday cake- that is why I volunteered. I figured my pay is the smile on a kids face, and the bonus' is the practice I will obtain in the process, and I get to do what I am enjoying - baking and decorating cakes! See- for all of us that need a reason to do a cake for practice here is the PERFECT solution!

I've seen their website and think it's a wonderful idea.

I haven't volunteered because I'm afraid they'd need more cakes than I can afford the ingredients for...part of being a homemaker for me is that we're making do on one salary that doesn't seem to stretch as far as it used to.

I tried to contact the office in Houston and got an automated reply that the individual was not available and to contact another. I sent them an email and have received nothing and its been about two weeks. I really want to help, but don't know how. Anyone in the Houston area involved with this?

I also tried to contact them to contribute and got nothing.
I also tried the other sites for Michigan and it just comes up domain names, etc.

This would be wonderful if we could make contact somehow.

The last time I worked was when I was pregnant with my youngest, and she's turning 4 next week. Sometimes I don't even know how I'll ever manage to go back to work or what I'll do when I have to. Right now we've got some medical bills that we have to pay, and they're on a sliding scale so if I went back to work, we'd have to pay a lot more, so for the next 4 years until they're paid off I'm probably not going to be working...but we've already cut everything down to the minimum...we quit smoking, only have one car, got rid of cable...

If you're on facebook they have a group there... When I contacted them a while back I got a speedy reply.

I didn't fill in the application... at that time there were no listings for my state and they needed a manager for the area. Thanks for the reminder! I should check back in with them!

It has been a few weeks since my last email to/from Free Cakes For Kids headquarters, but I do know that Toni Paulos' (the founder) mother was gravely ill, so I'm wondering if that could be causing the delay in responses. TheR person at the head office that is easiest to get ahold of is Mischell Devine-Nunner. Her email is [email protected].

Last I knew she was the easiest to get ahold of at the time, although I'm unsure about Toni due to her mom's health. I'm sure if you can get ahold of her she can put in touch with the local person you're trying to contact, or she can help get you started. There's a short application to fill out before you're considered a volunteer for them. There's a newsletter also that you can refer to as far as donations (money, supplies, etc). It's a great program! I haven't been asked for any cakes yet, but I'm going to refresh the contacts that I have made so I can get really get started!

I just checked this site out.I am amazed that there wasn't a listing for KY.I guess it's time we started one.If this lady is ill and you don't get a response I wonder if our local resource center would have any info. or be able to help you get started on this venture?I couldn't donate a tremendous amount but I could donate a few a month.Hopefully we'll find out something soon.I didn't see any form.Is that something they send when they respond to your email?

Thank you for this info. I just made a cake on Monday, a beautiful castle cake to feed 70 people. I was just practicing to improve my skills. I called my church to see if they knew of any child celebrating a birthday, i donated it.

I would do it again in heartbeat!!

I am so glad my fellow CCers are willing to help or to hear that some have already been trying to help. I am with alot of you, I don't have a lot to donate with, but I am going to do all I can to help- not saying someone else is not doing all they can- and as I stated before it will serve my benefit (practicing) as well as a well deserved reason- the child! (Friends and family can only eat so much of my "practice" LOL)

No, you work in your own area to provide cakes for kiddos. This way not only do the lucky kids in the original free cakes for kids area get the benefits, but so do kids all around the country!

I didn't know there was such a group. I contacted several shelters in my area (Michigan) to see about donating birthday cakes to kids there, but no one at any of the shelters have returned my phone calls or emails. I though I had a stupid idea or something, but obviously I don't.

I'm just curious how much demand there is... how many cakes for kids have you made?

Is anyone a chapter manager? What all is required?

I have been a volunteer for a few weeks now. I have sent mailings to churches but haven't got any response yet.
I checked in to heading chapter and was advised to build up the calender first. If you do the chapter, you have the volunteers for your area under you, but everything still has to go through the main website (volunteer apps and such). You also have to have a seperate website.

I've been a member of Free Cakes for Kids since earlier this year, and I've done a ton of free cakes. I've been posting flyers and advertising through my myspace, facebook and website. I tried to get a few bakers from Miami area but no one was interested. I love doing things like that...I also am starting with my cousin free cake, cookie and cupcake decorating classes at my church. The founder of Free cakes for kids really inspired me to want to do things like that for kids..i love it!

This is great! My x was in rehab center (one of about a zillion, wont go there) during his birthday. The Lions club brought him a birthday cake. I wonder if it could be expanded beyond kids? Although kids deserve the best celebrations, everyone needs a cake on their birthday!

I work in a school and am planning on giving information to our social workers... I thought they would know some of the really needy kids. Unfortunately there are families that wouldn't care enough to request a cake for their children and I was hoping to target that population as well.

I want to get this started in Australia - I have never heard anything like this before! Just read the home page on how it got started - Tears and Goosebumps! Have messaged the admin in Facebook, so will wait for a reply.

We are watching our pennies at the moment too, but a kid not having a birthday cake breaks my heart. As we all know the most expensive part is our time - and that I am willing to give. Count me in!!!! Any other Aussie's on here want to join me?

Mind is ticking over - wouldn't it also be nice to drop a cute little cuppie in to residents in Nursing Homes for their birthday!

I am amazed there is one only a few miles from me (and in such a small city too) I think I will wait until both my kids are in school, since my oldest is just starting this year.

I am not for sure, but I think Ms. Toni has also started doing elderly people also. I scanned over the newspaper articles and think it was in there! My youngest is starting high school next week, but I figured since I have already started contacting churches in my county and one neighboring county that I would hit the social workers at the schools and also drop some flyers by the second hand stores in both counties.

I'm involved in something very similar, the cake is free...but the family received a Bible and literature about Jesus and how to obtain eternal life. You can't beat the look on the kids faces when they realize someone they don't even know thought about THEM on THEIR birthday and made a cake especially for them!!!

Does anyone know of any organizations already started in Central Florida. I have emailed the organization and also the Tallahassee charter to see if they have one closer to me.

This sounds awesome...
