Is Maroon Close To Aubergine?

I am trying to make an aubergine colored gum paste, or eggplant purple. When I look at my color wheel I could just add black to burgundy, but when I try that the gp turned gray. So I guess the color wheel works better for oil paints than food coloring (here we go again with problems with the black food coloring). I have seen a food color by Americolor called Maroon. Has anyone tried it? Is their maroon darker than their burgundy? I would order it if I have to, I just hate paying for shipping when it is only one item.
Thank you

You want to add a wee bit of BLUE to maroon to get eggplant purple.
If you only have primary colours, red and blue makes purple, but not necessarily equal amounts depending on the shade you are going for. HTH
