I was wondering what everyone covers their cake boards with. I have been buying a roll of stuff from the craft store (I think it is Wilton's) and it cost $8.00 a roll. I used it up in no time. Could I use wrapping paper and just wax paper or something?

I use plain aluminium foil. The Wilton Fanci-Foil is wayyyy too expensive. I heard some people on here say they cover the boards with any wrapping paper but cover it with plastic wrap so the grease won't soak in.

I cover my cake boards with Reynolds Freezer paper. I can get a large roll of it for less than $5.00 and it lasts forever.

i use contac paper (tie tac, adhesive vinyl, etc.) it comes in all sorts of colours and patterns, so you can coordinate it with your cake. i once used a white contact paper that had a blue floral pattern all over it on a cake circle, and someone did a double-take when i picked it up and it obviously weighed next to nothing -- she had thought (from seeing from a distance earlier) that it was real china!

I bought a roll of Fancy foil at my local cake suppy store. . . It was about roughly the same price and I have yet to replace it. . . I'm not making cakes every weekend though. . .

I think the Wilton brand would be a smaller roll, b/c they want you to keep buying more. If anything, look into ordering it online from another vendor.

Also, I've read about different techniques in the forum where people use, wrapping paper covered with contact paper, Tissue paper covered with contact paper. . . and even regular foil. I personally don't like the way regular foil looks, I think it takes away from the beauty of the cake.

Yup, that's true too Calejo! I did it once, it looks great, but that fondant really goes to waste, because unless you have someone that totally loves fondant, that cake board with fondant will go directly into the trash. . .
If you do cover your boards in fondant, make sure to charge more, b/c fondant is not cheap icon_smile.gif

I've used the wrapping paper and then contact paper over that...it's great because you can just wipe it off and reuse it later if you have a cake that coordinates....that is, if you ask that your board be returned to you & you ACTUALLY get it back!! lol I also cover my cake drums this way and make sure to use removable tape, if possible, so that I can reuse the drum as long as it wasn't dented or compromised in some other way.

For wedding cakes I cover the cake board with thinned royal icing. I put it on after the cake is in place. You just pour it on little by little and use some sort of utensil to move it over the whole board. When it dries it has a very smooth surface.

I have used wallpaper scraps, covered in contact paper. I also like to pick up cute dinner plates from the Dollar store, and let the person keep the plate. They usually have some cute melamine ones with seasonal looks (watermelon for summer, for example). This is a cute idea if the cake is for a friend and you can match the plate decor to the friend's interests!

Sorry--it's not very easy to see the board!

The cake board is a foil-covered one purchased from a cake decorating shop. I thought the foil would detract from the cake--that's why I used the royal icing.

I use reynolds tin foil. I think the contact paper is a great idea. I'm going to try that.

Thanks for asking that question CKirkland. I was wondering the same thing. I use the Fanci Foil and it is very expensive. Will have to start looking for pretty contact paper.

I like using foil from the floral supply shop. You can even find some at craft stores, such as Michael's. They usually have more on each roll, and I like the kind with the plastic backing, because it is not as easy to rip the corners accidentally! Sometimes you can find white, as sometimes the colors can take over for the cake and are too loud, it depends on your project!

I use two foam boards hot glued together with a couple of square pieces underneath to elevate it off the table. I cover the board with thinned royal icing and airbrush color on it to match the cake and attach a matching ribbon to cover the edge.

I've also covered it with fondant, used gum paste cutters to remove pieces and then insert other colors in they're place. Overlapping different colors and shapes.

i use contact paper, for me its the cheapest and readily available. For weddings i will cover with fondant, i build the price of the board into the cost of the cake.

I love to use wrapping paper. If you find a thicker wrapping paper they work really well. Plus it's easy to match to the theme of the party.

I love the way fondant looks but like alengirl said it does get expensive. It's hard to beat the look though. thumbs_up.gif

I also like to use plastic table cloths from the dollar store. They come in a tonne of colours and wipe up really easily (in case of mistakes which I make a lot of!).

The place I get my boards from come prewrapped in the fanci foil and then I put clear contact paper on them so it's easy to wipe off and you can't see it. I make sure to put "please return to..." with my cell phone number on the back of the board.

Cake boards over here come covered in a silver or gold foil. If I'm doing a royal iced cake I leave this showing. If I'm doing a sugarpaste cake I roll the icing slightly larger than needed so I can cover the board at the same time

Haha, all of the above. I also use the clear contact paper over regular wrapping paper, just the top of the board though. Then it can be wiped and re-used if you wish.

So, if I may press on .... When I cover a round cake board, I cut the paper a little larger than the board, cut slits and tape each little tab onto the back of the board. Finally, I cut another circle a tiny bit smaller than the board to hide the back. It's a pain and I use so much tape. Is there something easier?

I too have always used polyfoil without incident. There are more colors to choose from. TheViennaus, you could always hot glue foil to the cakeboard.
