I'm not sure how to make a silver coating that I can paint on parts of a car cake to make it look like chrome. I've searched around this sight but haven't found what I'm looking for. Can it be purchased? Is it just a matter of mixing silver dust with something? I'm painting it on fondant parts and then attaching to the car. This cake is needed Friday the 1st.

You can use either Nu-Silver Luster or for a more brilliant shine (like dragees) use hi-liter dust.

Is that a powder you have to mix up with something or is it premade?

Oops, sorry, I realized I didn't answer you all the way... I mix them with vodka...about the consistency of maple syrup.

E-mail me if you wish...

I used the nu silver and it wasn't good. Maybe I didn't get it mixed well. I guess I will have to try it again. Does Vodka work batter tahn clear vanilla?

I like the vodka myself... the hi-liter dust is not so opaque as the Nu-silver.

The hi-liter gives you a more brilliant shine.

Would you happen to now who carries Nu-Silver? I've never seen it where I get most of my cake supplies. Would Wiltons Shimmer Dust work? I have some of that I've never used.

i am not sure what the alcohol content in clear vanilla is but i am pretty sure it is the alcohol that makes it work...... i think lol

I just use luster dust mixed with clear vanilla or lemon extract (you can also use vodka). Here's the one I use it is easily available at Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

I use the luster dust that's sold with the cake decorating supplies at Michael's. The reason for using vodka is that the alcohol evaporates faster than water so it doesn't make your fondant or gumpaste so soggy.

You can use anything that has alcohol, such as lemon extract or vanilla extract. Vodka doesn't leave a flavor or odor on the cake so I like it better (plus a little swig once in a while when I'm decorating doesn't hurt, either...ha).

Thank you Jennifer. I really didn't like the nu silver for what I was doing. I wanted it to look like sterling and the nu silver didn't give me that effect. It would probably be pretty over a color but I was painting white.

If you want a metallic finish that doesn't flake off easily, like most do, mix with confectioners glaze, works great!

I've tried the Wilton silver luster dust and had no luck. Someone on this site directed me to Global Sugar Arts and their luster dust. I got Nu-Silver from GSA and got a perfect silver paint.

I mixed my luster dust with vodka, but I have also used peppermint extract. It has a high alcohol content, and it's great to use. The peppermint smell goes away as the paint dries.

Bakery Crafts makes a silver, gold, and pearl glaze that you paint on. So much easier then mixing dust with alcohol. I get it at my local cake decorating store but here's a web site that sells it http://www.pastrysampler.com/Products/glaze.htm

I agree with Tiggy2. The fondant glaze would work perfectly. I used it on Crusting BC...(scroll work).. it took two coats but it was exactly what I wanted. I'm sure since it was made to work with fondant that the silver would be the thing to use. No additional products to buy. I used 1 1/2 bottles to do the scrollwork on a 4 tier cake...so it goes a long way!
