Hi, I am totally new at cake decorating and found your site. I would like to make a lego cake for my son's 7th birthday coming up on May 3. I thought fondant would look the nicest giving my cake a smooth look, but I have some questions:
1. What kind of fondant?
2. Does it come tinted already?
3. How does it taste - I don't want to make a pretty cake that tastes yucky!
4, Suggestions on what to use for the round tops on the lego brick.
5. Suggestions on a basic cake recipe that will take the decorating.
Anything else you think I should know.
Please, any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated as I am eager to learn something new!
Thanks,
Eva

Midge,
I have a lego wedding cake in my gallery. You can see it if you click on photos below.

I used buttercream, but for a beginner, you may get a smoother finish with fondant. I took sugar cookies that were baked and cut out a circle so it would have a nice clean sharp edge. Then I iced those for the "dots."

Look at recipes here. Alot of people use a doctored mix..WASC...white almond sour cream. You can use any flavoring you like. It does not have to be almond if you prefer something else. There are also recipes for fondant. I would stay away from the Wilton fondant. Alot of people use Satin Ice.

You will find alot of help on this site. Good Luck!

Eva,
What I have done for a lego cake (sorry I don't have a pic I did it about 4 years ago) I made twon 9x13 cakes and cut them into thirds making 3 pieces of lego with two layers.
I had 2 'legos' standing upright and one on it's side. for the interlocking pieces I used marsmallows glued them on with icing then just iced those as well. You can also make cupcakes and just carve them into a cylinder so the bottom doesn't fan out.
I had just used buttercream icing, but as classicake said previously it's not as easy to get that smooth look. I like using MMF (marshmallow fondant) it's easy to make and it tastes pretty good, very sweet though.
Then I just used the Wilton colour gel and knead the colour in.
Both a cake recipe and the MMF you can find if you search in the recipes section. I usually just use a basic recipe white or chocolate and have never run into any probelms.

HTH,
Happy creating!
AShley
