Very big newbie here! I have for many years LOVED pastry making. Have a large assortment of desserts I do for events and friends. BUT... I have just started to get interested in doing cakes. Just did my first "sold" cake this past weekend. I did just buttercream frosting as I am not really in love with fondant. Just not something I want to eat. So, on these BEAUTIFUL cakes here, is the fondant really meant to be eaten, or peeled off after served?

Boy do I feel like this is such a weird question, but i just have to know.

Thanks for any input you could give.

And I am already addicted to the website. You all are just unbelievable.

Thanks
Renee

Welcome Renee!!! You will absolutely love it here!

Yes, the fondant is meant to be eaten. Some people peel it off (personal choice), but in my experience most people eat it.

I use Satin Ice, and absolutely love the taste. When I'm working with it, I have a hard time not popping a piece in my mouth...

Congrats on finding a new addiction!!

I have been decorating for years and always used BC. But to be able to keep up with the times we do what we must do. I have started using rolled buttercream to cover cakes in, it's still up to the customer whether or not they want to eat it but some will. Don't forget to thinly ice with BC before using either RBC or Fondants. I do hear that the recipe for MMF is good.

MMF (marshmallow fondant) is the best tasting and can be addicting!!

I'm really new at this too and am glad you asked this question. I have only used fondant on one cake I made for a baby shower I threw for a friend of mine. It was a big baby rattle and i just made polkadots out of the fondant. One of the little girls there loved the fondant circles and was eating the extras like candy. Good luck with your future cake making and thanks for asking this question I may not have had the nerve too. You are not alone icon_biggrin.gif

I use satin ice and it gets eaten about 99% of the time. My daughter begs for scraps when I make a cake at home. lol

So glad to find this thread. I've been doing cakes for several years, and have only done a handful of fondant cakes. Most people I even mention it to say the same thing..."Nobody I know likes the texture or the taste, and they just peel it off, so I think I'll stick with buttercream" Can't count how many times I've heard that! But, I'm going to give the MMF recipe a try and see if I can't convince a few folks to switch!

This is just my expierence but kids do love the stuff. From what I can tell in my family most of the times the adults usually peel it off and the children cant get enough of it. If I am using fondant I usually make mmf It taste good I personaly can't eat it with cake though but I will eat it on its own when i'm making it I will usually be eatting it lol.

How funny! I'm doing a wedding cake in a couple of weeks, and the bride JUST e-mailed me to tell me that she wanted fondant instead of BC! Guess I'll be doing a MMF CRASH COURSE! Hahaha...

I usually find that adults leave the fondant while children eat it all up!

MFF (Michele Foster's Fondant) is even better than MMF (marshmallow fondant) both recipes are listed in the recipes section.

I can eat some of it (MFF) is really good especially when you make it with white chocolate but because it is still so new to me I'm still getting used to "chewing" cake. icon_lol.gif

If you've only used Wilton Fondant then yes please peel it off. It is horrible tasting. I only use (what is left over from class) it to make decorations that I know are not going to be eaten.

I have made several different fondant recipes from this site and they were just ok. I got a large wedding order that calls for ivory colored fondant so I bit the bullet and ordered Satin Ice.......sweet mother of angels, that stuff is good.

I have to beat the children off with a spatula! They beg for it. I am going to make Easter cookies with it tomorrow (providing my cookies don't spread again icon_sad.gif )

I've only done 1 cake with fondant and the fondant was stripped off because of the taste- it was wilton's fondant. So that's why i prefer to do BC cakes only. But lately I've been wanting to try doing fondant cakes. So I'm going to try it. With another fondant though, like MMF or Michele Foster's. I'm pretty sure that anything has to be better than wilton's lol. Besides, a lot of CC'ers love them. So I'm pretty confident that they'll taste yummy. Hopefully then the fondant won't be stripped off lol.

I only use fondant for accents. I buy the Wilton fondant and it's awful. The fondant does look really great, I'm just not convinced it's worth it as I am a stickler for fabulous tasting cakes/fillings/frostings.

When I was just starting out and thought Wilton was my only option, I believed fondant just wasn't meant to be consumed. I've discovered though that there are good tasting fondants out there (the pp have mentioned them all!). I mostly make MMF (recipe here on the site), and yesterday I made a batch using the suggested Creme Royal emulsion. It smells and tastes GREAT! Since there are great-tasting fondants available, I've found that if people STILL don't care for it, it's more of a texture issue than a taste issue. Some people just can't get used to something kind of 'chewy' on cake. Those people usually just scrape the buttercream away from the fondant and leave the fondant on their plates, but more often than not if they try it they're quite surprised!

Welcome to CC!

~Sarah

I did a fondant cake for my dd and when my kids saw it they thought I made a cake out of play doh, I prefer butter creme and people eat it, but with fondant I too found that adults don't eat it.

I use satin Ice and I always peel it off when I eat my cake. I just get tired of the smell of it. It seems like I can already taste it by its smell.

I've heard that Jennifer dont'z has great tasting fondant recipe. I really want to get her DVDs.

On my suitcase cake I made MMF. I took it to work and warned everyone it probably doesnt taste good (Im on low carb diet so didnt taste it!) Plus I had brushed it with cocoa powder to age it. Well everyone was eating it, said it tasted like candy corn lol! Even today people are telling me that they loved the cake and really loved the taste of the fondant. I have never tasted regular fondant so I have nothing to compare it too.

Wow, that is such great information. People always say that MMF is really good, but no one ever described what it tasted like. I think a candy corn flavor might be yummy enough to try! Thanks!

Oh my that was a lovely cake in your pictures. But honestly, I would not lay fondant on a cake of which I have never tasted. I don't think that an itsy bitsy tiny piece of fondant will ruin your diet.

Btw, I think the cocoa powder idea is great. I should try that.

When it's Michele Foster fondant...oh yeah, I can't find a single thing about that that isn't pure deliciousness. I had heard that Satin Ice was great....but it still tastes chemically to me. I suppose rolled pretty thin, it wouldn't be bad. But I don't want "okay" taste. I want "that is awesome!" taste.

I sure do love Wilton for covering dummies, and that it is so great to work with....just not the taste. Except when I had to mix some in with MFF once to stretch my supply for a cake. It wasn't awful...I couldn't tell. I hope I never have to do that again though! Heh heh.....

I've tried quite a few different fondants. As far as taste goes, Sweet Inspirations White Chocolate is IMHO the best. It comes in many colors As far as ease of use, Fondex is fabulous. Combine them and you have the perfect fondant...again, in my humble opinion. Both can be ordered online.

Welcome to the family Renee icon_smile.gif

I've made cakes using MMF, also BC and Satin Ice fondant. Of them all I loved Satin Ice. It's so much easier to deal with and tasty too.

I personaly am one of those who "peel" off the fondant, I will try a small amount, that's it. Too sweet for me. Go figure. icon_lol.gif

But I will say NEVER to wilton. The smell and flavor it's just soooo bad. I've used eventually just for accent decorations, in emergency cases.

The thing is, you just have to try the different kinds and find the one you and your clients will like the best.

You will find a lot of help here, and addiction is just the begining!! Enjoy CC and welcome again! icon_biggrin.gif

Thank you all so much. I just knew you would come through for me. So I think I will just have to try something for Easter. Family... they will try most anything. Think I might just try to MMF first.

Here I go, on my quest to be a small fraction as good as the cakes I see here.

I tried Wilton at first, but the taste was soooo bad. Now I use MMF. I love the taste, and it is very easy to make.
