I know I've seen posts on here before about character cakes and whether it is illegal to form (say disney) characters from gumpaste and sell them or not. I tried to search out the info in the forum search and I couldn't bring up any info.

reproducing anything that is copyrighted i against the law. even usng the character pans - you cant sell somethng you make with them. you should contact the owner of the copy right to do something - odds are you will get a no.

I have been looking thru websites lately to get ideas on how to photograph my cakes and to see what I like as far as web design. I continue to see pictures posted of cakes that are themed around copyrighted characters.
My concern is that I don't want to post pics of cakes that will not be available to my customers. Yet, everyone's cakes are great and if I make a kick butt cake for one of my girls' birthday parties.....I would want to post it too. I guess I'm on the fence here.
How do your customers feel when they see these pics on your sites, yet the character option is not available for them???
Even though I have made some kick-butt character cakes for my son, niece, friends, for free, I don't post those pictures on my web site.
1. You don't want customers asking for something you don't provide.
2. The copyright owner's lawyers could find your site and THINK you are selling those items.
Not worth it.
I've done a few cakes where I have used (new) character toys, that is perfectly legal as far as I'm aware.

Actually from what I have read on this subject this isn't legal either. The customer must provide and place the toy. OR if you sell the candle or toy in your store you must write out separate receipts for the cake and candle or toy. Anyway that's what I have read on various boards and under copyright law postings.
