Has anyone experienced problems with the Wilton gel colors and candy melts???? When I used them last night it made my chocolate pasty and yuck!! I used a different brand and had no problems. Not sure if it is Wilton colors in general or maybe just a "bad" container of orange that I used.

wilton gel colors are water based, candy melts/chocolate do not like water!! You have to use special candy coloring that is oil based to color melts and choc.

Hi yeah I have had the same problem in the past. You can't use paste colors/gel when adding to melting chocolate. It will always get pastey or a weird consistancy. You have to use powdered color made to color chocolate. I bought it added to the melted chocolate and it worked great! Hope this helps, although I could only get this from my cake supply guy not an arts and craft store. You could try Global sugar they may have it too. Good Luck!

Add some Crisco to it & you can get it back, but it helps a lot to use colored melts & I like the powdered colors

Thanks so much for the advice!!! Now wonder it didn't work!!! This is the first time I have ever done candy molds and colored chocolate. I am going to order some candy coloring today!!!! I somehow managed to get it to work the second batch but it was still difficult. One more thing, I am making chocolate sea shells and would like to give them a glitter or pearl look, can you just paint them like you would fondant? It seems like it wouldn't stick.

I use paste coloring but it's not wilton ... as mentioned above, can't use water based coloring.

I'm not a fan of powdered colors ... it seems I always end up with speckled chocolate .... speckled like the candy coated easter egg candies. icon_confused.gif

I dry brush my chocolate. It will bead up if you try to paint it on

Crap! What can I do? I need these things to be gold, that's why I wanted to use my airbrush colors. icon_sad.gificon_sad.gificon_sad.gif

I don't know if I can help you fix your problem Ayanami but chocolate does not do well being airbrushed. It doesn't work. I'd remelt them and dry dust with lustre dust if they can be salvaged.

I have only tried to air brush 2 of them, cn I just dry brush the other ones now? or do I have to remelt them? At what stage do I do the dry brushing?

Sorry, I have no idea what I'm doing with these danged old candy melts! icon_redface.gif

I made some white choc seashells and dry-brushed some luster dust on them. They didn't turn a solid gold color .... just a "luster" of gold shimmer.

If you only ruined two of them then just drydust the rest of them with lustre dust and you should be fine. I thought you ruined the whole batch. icon_rolleyes.gif

Wilton makes gel colors for frosting and some for the candy melts/chocolate. The candy colors are oil based, there are usually in the same aisle as the cake decorating supplies at Michaels. Very difficult to get the gel colors for frosting to work with candy melts.

I think I remember someone saying before that you can dry brush the mold before you put the candy melts or chocolate in them. It will not give you solid color but more of a shine or luster.
