Does anyone have any pics of a rustic messy looking wedding cake? Like the kind where the icing is not smoothed out, but more so than just a little messy. The bride brought me a picture of one, it is white and I think it has white chocolate leaves on it. Please post a pic if you have one or email me, Thanks

Sorry I no long have a pic but it sure isn't easy to make 'messy' icing when we have worked sooooooo hard to smooth themicon_smile.gif!
I used gp sticks, acorns, and greens.
To mess up the icing, use the back of a spoon to make 1/2 circles in a slightly thicker icing than you would normally use.
This works good using Earlene Moore's Cream Cheese Buttercream recipe.

Here's a rustic cake I did. The icing texture was made by holding my spatula straight up-and-down, and flicking my wrist a little bit.

This isn't exactly a rustic wedding cake icon_rolleyes.gif , but it does have messy icing. Not sure if what you are looking for, so I figured I would throw it on here in case it helps you.

Yes, those are more like what she is looking for, the snow one is alot like the pic. I am not sure if it is called rustic or not though!

Here's one that I did for a bride last summer. She wanted a blueberry theme with a rustic finish so I wove some artificial blueberry springs together and incorporated some brown ribbon to make the swag. I also did one in chocolate buttercream with mixed chocolate curls/shavings but I think this one might be more helpful to you. Good luck with your cake.

Here's another one that has a rustic style. Although mine has a fondant finish, the design is one that could be easily used for a "messy" buttercream finish. It's not my design - my bride brought me a picture so unfortunately I can't give credit to the original cake designer. It's on a real block of wood (covered in clear contact paper) with silk birds and artificial twigs.

I love that idea!! with the real block of wood... how creative!!

I will have to keep that in mind. Im dying to do something more "earthy" or nature relate. It has a very classy look. Love the tall tiers icon_smile.gif

Here is the cake that I did for my brother and SIL. They wanted fruit flan and rustic. I did it by spinning the cake on a turntable and using the tip of my spatula.

Classycakes, what a great job of recreating the Martha Stewart Forest Cake! It's looks awesome!

Justbeck101, Martha Stewart Weddings has several "messy" cakes as well. Swiss or Italian Buttercream works really well for this effect.

Thanks for the kind words! And thank you Win for letting me know where the design came from! I admit I was curious about that!

It looks easy to do, but then I have been trying to make icing perfect for so long I don't want to short change the look she is asking for.

This was actually tougher to do than I expected. I just couldn't find the right tool to use -and I tried many things. What ended up working for me a small spatula, silicone, that is in the shape of a spade. I found it at KMart, just walked past it and it caught my eye. It's small, the actual silicone part is about an inch and a half long... but it worked like a charm! I just put a thick crumb coat... not too thick but a little thicker than usual. I then used that spatula and basically spackled it on.... Not the best description but please let me know if you have any other questions... I took me a while to get the hang of it but then I was excited with the results! good luck!
