Do You Cover Your Cake Board?

Do you cover your cake board? If so, with what? I use the foil but I'm wondering if there is something else to use. Thanks!

I use masonite boards and you can use fondant on those. Make sure that you cover it with saran wrap so it's easier to remove.

For regular boards I have used regular wrapping paper and scrap book paper. I just put the bottom cake on a another board so the icing doesn't soak into the paper.

I use fondant. After I place the cake on the board, I just place a strip of fondant all th eway around it (rather than covering the whole board before setting the cake on it). This is how Lindy Smith does it, too. You can use impression mats and otherwise decorate the board.

Where do you get masonite boards? I'm picturing pressed board with laminate over it, is that it? Does it have a raw edge?

I do cake drums covered in fondant.

There is a really great decorated on Flickr, Cakes By Ashley, and it looks like she sometimes uses cellophane?

Calynmom, I have a question. Are the boards you buy finished in any way? I bought some masonite and cut some of my own and they have a strong smell that doesn't go away. I have been afraid that smell will soak into my cake so I cover the masonite with Wilton foil.

I buy the big pack of multi colored tissue paper from michael's and then I cover my board with whatever color coordinates with my cake, then cover that in cellophane or saran wrap. I used to use wrapping paper but it was getting expensive. scrap booking paper sounds like a great idea though for a really nice board. I'm going to try that!

Hi all!... For some projects I have even covered with "thinned" royal icing. Great ideas here! Can't wait to try some!

I use wrapping paper or fondant. I stock up on different colors when it's on sale. After the any holiday is a great time!

I use masonite as well. I trim out the top with a ring of coordinating fondant and the edges get ribbon hot glued on. I don't re-use my boards so I don't worry about being able to remove anything.

Fondant that ties in the theme of the cake, or thinned royal icing for a smooth, elegant look -- trim with ribbon (again, tying into the theme of the cake such as zebra stripe ribbon if the cake has them in it elsewhere.)

I use thinned royal icing a lot, I love the effects you get swirling several colors together. If not royal I use fondant, especially if I am looking for a textured effect.

Right now I make my own cake drums out of cardboard circles, and cover with the Wilton foil paper. When I need something taken up a notch, I'll buy different colored foil paper from the local cake supply store.

I've used, contact paper, wrapping paper, scrapbooking papers, wall paper, fondant, tissue paper with the little dot yard sale stickers that I colored in with a black sharpie LOL......sometimes ya gotta get creative!

I use Wilton Fanci-Foil. Looks great and resists grease.

About the only thing I haven't seen in the answers yet is you can use freezer paper. It's that white 'butcher paper' that is plastic coated on one side that you wrap meat in for putting in the fzr.
Haved used most of the ideas already suggested.

I buy my masonite boards already done. They have no smell to them at all. I've never made my own.

I love the freezer paper idea. Will try that.

I also use the freezer paper. I live in a small place, so cake supplies or some other things a hard for me to find. The freezer paper works out great for me, but there are times I would like to be able to try something else.

I use almost anything cavered with contact paper. plastic table covers are probably the best $$$ wise because you can get them at the dollar store and they cover many many boards

normally I put clear contact over the paper, my bottom cake is always on it's own board so it really wouldn't matter but I do put the contact just in case some of the icing should happen to cause a grease stain on the paper or something.
