Well I thought it was a good idea when the bride was describing what she wanted:
White buttercream round cakes (4 tiers high) with brown (yes brown) ribbon on the bottom of each tier. Plus Pink polka dots on the cakes and Pink gerber daisies on top.
Just because it's my first wedding cake, I decided to make a test 'mini' cake and when I saw how it actually looked everyone in my family agreed it was more like a birthday cake, especially with the pink polka dots. I sent a picture of the test cake to the bride and she said "I love it! It's everything I imagined!"
So do I tell the bride what it really looks like and risk hurting her feelings or do I give her exactly what she wants? I just don't want to do a cake I'm not proud of. Where's the balance?
Give her what she wants. I just had the same thing happen and it was so UGLY and tacky, but thats what she wanted and she loved it.
Of course you make it how she wants. Beauty is truley in the eye of the beholder. Just because you think it is ugly,to her it is beautiful.

Theres lots of wedding cakes out there that could double as a birthday cake. just because we dont like it doesn't mean they wont either. you were very nice to do a trial run, and send her the picture, which she seemed thrilled with, so you shouldn't have any worries.
If her check didn't bounce, then I can't see what the problem is. It's her wedding cake and if you create the cake of her dreams, then you've made her the happiest bride in town.
Brown and pink seem to be very popular colors this year. I'm seeing a lot of them.

I agree wit hthe others. If she wants something that is not your cup of tea, do it, and do your best to make her happy. If you REALLY think it turns out fugly when you make it, just leave it out of your portfolio.

I think it sounds nice. Pink and brown are trendy and once you have 4 tiers with the flowers on top, I think it will really work.
the white, pink and (yes) brown polka dotted wedding cake in my pics has been soooo popular! i have it as a display in the window of the shop I rent, and i get tons of comments on it from brides who love it. it is a popular trend, and i think it will turn out beautiful! i've had several order weddings cakes almost exactly like it since i started to display it.
The mini cake probably looked funny because it was mini. I think it will look nice in the large scale. Besides, I agree with everybody, it's HER cake. (Remember the phrase "don't shoot the messenger" ... you're the messenger.
This is the bride's cake, not yours. It's her wedding, not yours. You are the baker of choice, she has chosen YOU to do HER cake.
Give her exactly what she wants, and like MichelleNJ says---if you don't care for the cake design personally---don't put it in your album.
Get ready to do this for the rest of your cake career. It's just what we do.

I've had customers find some kind of homemade-by-mom birthday cake photo and want it from me. I sure don't put it on my website, but if that's what they want, and they want to pay my price, hey why not?
Another thought....
If you end up thinking it looks more like a birthday cake advertise it (group it) with your Birthday cake portfolio too. Maybe you will get orders for it for 15s or 16s or 21s or something! Not only that but it shows clients/ brides that you can do a large tiered cake. Just more proof and more practice!
